I know the Comfort Kit flash thing has been beaten to death a bit on here. But I still have a couple of simple questions for those that used to have the comfort kit without the flash, and then later got the flash that changes the fan logic.

1. Do you notice a change in the heat on the frame and the seat with the new fan logic?

2. Do you wish you could go back to the old fan logic? Why?

Trevd, I fit your survey target having gotten the comfort kit hardware in early Nov. and the re-flash 4200 or so miles later. I had the same questions, had read about one guy who wanted to go back, etc., and I planned to wait and see. However, after reading about the significant number of positive 'tweaks' the new flash provides for various parts of the bike I jumped in. I may not be super sensitive or super observant but I am happy with the re-flash. I 'believe' that the bike runs cooler over the entire range of operation because I trust the folks who say they data logged it. I 'trust' that a number of improvements came along with the re-flash, and I 'know' that my bike runs as good as it ever did and heat has not been a problem for me here in 90 degree South Texas so far.

I understand your questioning the re-flash and hope this helps.

Ah, Trevd, I just noticed that you are in Ontario and ride a 2008 black XT! Maybe the stars are aligned here! The seemingly very smart fellow that provided a lot of the comfort I needed to go ahead with the re-flash posted from Ontario and I ride a 2008 black XT, yes the fastest ones!

I bought my uly xt in Oct. just after the big announcement and had the dealer installed the comfort kit. They did that but did not do the ecm reflash. The 1st farkel I installed was an oil temp dipstick. I put about 1000 miles on the bike before the winter and about 1500 more since March and never saw more than 190 degrees. I`ve had surging and seemingly lean fueling in the 1500-2500rpm range, but decent fuel milage. I found Dan Lang a 20yr+ vet Buell employee and he plugged my bike in to his laptop Sat and found it to be an old calibration, so he updated it,so it got the new fan logic too.Fuel milage is no worse in the 80 mile since the update but I did not duplicate my regular riding.I was much more aggressive going thru the rpm range so it could relearn. The motor runs much smoother and cleaner down below 2500 though it still surges. Its much better than it was.The fan stays off when I shut it down and runs above 15mph now. The temps were in the mid 80`s yesterday and the oil temp stayed below 190. Earlier this month while exploring southeastern Oh. I got slowed by traffic in Marietta for a couple lights and when we got to the hotel oiltemp was 230.I think the new fan logic will keep temps from getting out of control in those situations. As for fuel mileage and surging I will commute this week as much as I can and comment l8r this week.P.s. mines a black one too!

My 09 was purchased and run with the old fan logic from 0-15000 miles, give or take. At 15k, I installed the comfort kit and did NOT reflash. At 20k, I installed the Erik Buell Racing race ecm(with the new logic) and am now at 25k. The comfort kit WITH the new fan logic is the coolest and best so far. Just my two cents.

Portero did you do anything else to your bike other than the race ecm? Pipe? K&N? anything? Wondering if it runs better thanks to the RAce ecm, or the comfort kit flash or both?

Overall the bike is much cooler for the rider with the comfort kit flash. Sucking the heat off the back of the engine and blowing it out the back of the bike keeps the heat away from your legs. Aesthetically it's much better also, no or very little fan howling when you are parked at a nice scenic turnout.....(for example)

One thing I've noticed with the comfort kit but no flash update is that at times now, the left side of the frame gets hotter than the right. Yesterday, in mid 80's temps, with the wind blowing from my right side, the left side got nice and toasty.

I'm thinking that the wind was pushing the heat to the left frame rail because it had no where else to go.

I'm really happy with the reflash. With the comfort kit and no reflash the meat was falling off the bone. I used one of Odie's heat shields and put weather stripping between the seat and frame on both sides but then whichever way the wind was blowing would determine which leg got cooked (at least they were cooking evenly!). Also, the frame would get so hot that I couldn't hold my hand anywhere on it for about two hours after shut down.
After the reflash the frame gets pretty warm but nowhere as hot as before. Supposedly the fan runs at speeds greater than 15mph but even with stock exhaust I can't hear it. It must be running though because the heat isn't getting blocked up anymore. I highly recommend it.

OK, I guess it's pretty unanimous then - the comfort kit flash is the way to go!

Before I go and make an appt at the dealer to get it done, does anyone have any reason not to do it?

I wanted to go back to my Mar 09 stock set up because 1. I was worried about the fan not running when the air flow is least 2. It was "smoother" and felt like less "grunt" so to me it felt like a ricer more. The dealer in Great Falls MT said I could go back to latest flash available for my X (not Com Kit). So when I had my XB9 gear kit installed and comfort kit installed (I had flash but not kit yet) I noticed the fan logic was still the same. Grunt wise, hard to tell because that gear reduction is soooo much fun. Feels like a real dual sport. Engine running great. No real empirical data for you regarding cooling. Fan is not noticeable at speeds (unless you ride without a helmet). I am going to live with it like this because apparently I have no choice. I finally did see the fan come on at long lights...so it will do that if it gets too hot. Going to just ride it.

If you want I can screw with your fuel map and make it run like ass below 4k RPM so when you hammer on it, it will feel faster : D

Buellerxt-

No bearing issues...YET, nor any secrets. I have the orange seals now, I think black were original. My mechanic just changed them early in the bike's life because of a superseded part number. Plenty of rain, creek crossings, etc.

Jim-

The only other mod is a UNI filter. Stock exhaust, etc. The bike runs much better due to the race ecm mapping. For the record, I never got the bike 'reflashed'. The race ecm is programmed with the new logic. Hijack over.

I installed my comfort kit last year but did not get the ECM flashed. I liked the way the bike was running so I did not want to make a change until after it was tested for awhile. The good reviews has prompted me to get the ECM flashed.

So I stopped past Calumet HD/Buell yesterday afternoon and they flashed the unit while I waited. I really have to comment about how good the service is at Calumet. Great guys that alway help and a few of the service guys are Buell riders.

I only a short ride home but it seemed to run quite well. I did notice the fan running above 15 MPH with my earplugs out. It was strange not hearing the fan at shutdown.

Nobuell,

I'm in the exact same position - I'm happy with the way the bike is running, and don't want to mess with it unless there is considerable benefit regarding a reduction in the amount of heat.

Seems that there is, so I think I'm going to get the reflash...

I had meetings at work today so I could not ride to see how it feels. Maybe on Thursday.

I am leaving for a trip from Chicago area to Cincinnati OH for the holiday weekend. I will report back on how it runs and what the heat feels like.

I have the 06' with comfort kit and of course there is no flash available. As is, the fan never comes on except after shutdown. There just is no heat issue with the way it is now. Why anyone would want the fan running all the time while they are riding is beyond me. I look forward to the fan coming on at shutdown. Wasn't the original intention for the fan to keep the oil in the rear cylinder from cooking at shutdown? Now Buells that get the comfort kit reflash pretty much bypass that protection. Why would you want to do that?

Well, I'm thinking of doing it because my '08 with the comfort kit still has some heat issues on the frame and seat. I think the hot air is getting trapped under the seat.

I don't know why the '06 would be different - unless you've used ECMspy or similar to change the fuel injection settings so that you're engine is running cooler...

Filled the bike up yesterday and the fuel milage is up a bit, 46 mpg up from 44.5 commuting. ridabilty is better too. Got our 1st 90 degree temps this week and oil temp was 200 when I got to work but my leg was cooler.I don`t have an Odie heat blanket under the seat yet so the fan running does help the frame heat from getting to warm.
Overall pretty happy with the new calibration.

This keeps the heat from trapping under the seat. Maybe that is why my fan only comes on at shutdown. Scroll down this link:

I rode the bike into work today. It is hard to tell, but the motor seems a little smoother at low RPM. It is cooler at the frame. The frame was just warm to the touch, no burn.

I can hear the fan cycle on and off (above 15 MPH) without earplugs. With them it is just barely discernible.

It is still weird not hearing the fan after shut down.

So far, I am happy with the new flash.

I've got the heat blanket at the front under the seat and some foil tape under the seat, and on the inside frame rail. I don't have any sealing the little heat deflectors, so maybe I'll give that a shot.

Did a couple of long rides in +96 deg temps during the holiday. I believe the bike to feel much cooler on the seat and frame. Before the frame would get hot enough to almost burn your hands, now it juts gets warm to the touch. While stuck in some stop and go traffic I heard the fan go on when stopped. I also heard it run once or twice below 15 MPH after slow riding when going through towns.

So far I give it two thumbs up!

Yes I notice a lot less heat though still get plenty warm, Yes fan is not as annoying. Zero performance difference. No, never regretted switch, glad I did it.

Got mine flashed last week and am happy so far. The fan still comes on when I switch off, which was probably my main concern - couldn't see the logic in an air-cooled bike getting no air once it stopped.

It is strange that your fan still turns at shut down. After the flash my fan is normally off at shut down. It only came on at shut down once when really hot after stop and go.

Did the dealer install the latest flash?

Well, behaviour has definitely changed. Idle is faster at startup. Fan is on unless slow/stopping. When I switch off the fan runs, but at a lower speed than the old 'high-speed then low-speed' routine it used to follow.

This is total speculation, but I'm wondering if the flash is different for the EU models, which have cats fitted.

Did my first round trip to Baltimore (180miles) with the kit and flash. On the way down frames were warm.On the way home hit a lot of stop and go And frames got real warm but not hot. The kit&flash worked Great!
