I have 4600 miles on my original Stradas and 5mm of depth left on a good looking rear. The front looks new. I am strongly considering a 3000-3500 mile trip but I'd hate to see what Bdrag (another current thread)sees now and be stuck with a power fisted tech, behind closed doors, changing my tire and ruining my bearings far from home. I have a new set of Angels at the ready so I'm probably answering my own question but I hate to throw away a tire with 5mm of thread left, measured at the wear bars. On Electra Glides I replaced my front every other rear and I get 50% more life on my Sportster front than the rear. Do you guys change these sport tires in pairs or only when needed? Thanks. Jphish went 12,900 miles on a set of Michelin PR2's (four Corner Ride Review)with a couple thousand miles left! Anyone else with that kind of service? If so, that will be my next tire. ps: Heck, maybe I'm better off with a 4600 mile Strada than a new Angel!  (Message edited by buellerxt on May 23, 2010) | ||

I'd put the new on. You already own them. Save the old for a spare after the trip. I got enough mileage out of my Stradas to make the trip on top of the 4600. But like I said, put on the new rubber.YMMV | ||

I hear you, Ourdee, and I appreciate your input. I notice that you got 10,500 out of your rear Strada! Cool. What percentage of your miles are on the center part of the tire? Most of mine here in South Texas are. Looking at mine, with 5mm left on a great looking tire that had 8mm when new, I would think I could get another 3500 miles easily. I have 4600 now, probably another 400 before the 'maybe' 3500 mile trip, for a total of 8500 when I return, 46% more wear from this point. Hum, when I run the numbers like that it gets kinda close. Maybe I should just replace it and sleep comfortably, but I hate giving up 3500-4500 miles of wear!  | ||

Find out where you'll likely be at what time, and ask members of this board for their experiences with local honest competent techs, call ahead and tell them "so and so" referred you, and that you plan on coming in at X day if they are available. Have then order the tires in advance. Tip the tech well, and buy that new set of gloves you've thinking about. | ||

Buellerxt DUDE! Put on the Angels and RIDE. I am hard on tires. I get 20,000 on my pickup. 12,000 on the Vetts. Only got 16,000 on my wifes 2007 CRV! HAhahaaaaaa. Put them on and enjoy their ride. The tire works great! If you have that little wear at 4600 miles I may try a set of those. I am actually gonna see if I can find a BF GOODRICH A/T in my size! HAhahaaaaaaa. Not! Put the new tire on just before you leave. When ya get back throw the others back on and use them up. I have a friend with an SV 1000 and he put a PR2 on and off his ride 3 different time for trips. Hell, he offerd it to me for the Buell today because it still has some tread left! HAhahaaaaaaaaa. BDRAG | ||

I ride a lot of boring straight roads. I get on it when I'm turning to hear that chirp sound when hitting second leaned over. But most of the time, boring straight roads. | ||

10,500 miles and mostly straight roads! Cool. I should be able to get to 8500 then if I am now at 5mm depth at 4600 miles and the depth when new was 8mm. What pressures do you run, front and rear, Ourdee? Thanks. | ||

Hahaha, I never once checked the pressure on the first tires. I was too busy just riding it. I'm keeping a better eye on the new one though. It hit 89 degrees today and I last checked when it was 60 degrees so I'm probably 3 pounds over the manuals recommendations. I'll lower it this weekend if needed. It is in the 60s in the mornings right now. | ||

Hot temps do seem to soften up the tires and make them wear out faster. I wonder how long the tires would last if you drove it like a milk truck? |
