Well All,

I put the Pirelli Angel ST tires on back in early April. Put about 900 miles on them around town and out playing on the two lanes north of town. Then took them to Arkansas for four days. Total of 1300 miles. That included some short slab sections but almost all back roads and twisties to some degree.

We rode to get some Mexican food 65 miles away. We arrived there and I noticed the DEATH STRIPE on the rear tire. It was starting to feather down the center. Did the 65 miles back and arrived to see the following and decided to post a few pics. 2513 miles and its done! WASTED! The Front looks almost new! Look at the real nice power cupping as well. Tire was at 36 to 38 PSI its whole short life.

I never once had any of the DUEL SPROT tires on my DL start to give the DEATH STRIPE, they just wear out. So now what? PR2? The Pirelli Scorpion Trail 190 rear? CAR TIR? DANG!

Wow, I'd almost consider that unacceptable!

If you stick to the pavement, I'd put a Strada on there and be done with it. Once that wears out (and you need a new front and rear) I'd look HARD at the Pilot Road 2's.

If you do some gravel/dirt riding, go with the Scorpion Trails.

I was hoping the guy with the Scorpion Trails would get some hard miles on them before I needed a rear. Gues I will just go ahead and order a PR2 or the SCOR TRAIL. DANG! Gonna be $200 after its all said and done plus the rear berarings will probably be toast! HAhahaaaaaaaaaa.

Just for some perspective Bdrag, what kind of mileage have you gotten out of other tires on your Uly?

Is it just that one spot? If so maybe the tire is way out of balance...Think you would feel that though.

Maybe it's not the tires, but the roads? I don't know what they put in the asphalt in Arkansas, but it must be hell on tires. We used to a regular Badwebber (Eyore?) that went through tires on his Uly at an astounding rate.

I've put over 3000 on my angels and they still look great. I would say you either got a bad tire or you like to do burn outs.

This was only my second tire. I got 1952 on the Syncs when they came off. They were done at 1800 miles and I rode the rear till these came in. The Syncs did not show delam but were worn about as bad. So I got 25% more life from the angels. They went basically 500 miles more.

Don't panic. I am a fat bastard and we haul but when we can. 330 lbs. On the Arkansas trip or about 700 miles of the 1300 miles I had another 40 or 50 lbs of crap on the bike more than usual so it was basically maxed out.

Its 3/4 of the way around. Thats the worst spot. I balance my own tires and wheel. I find the heavy spot on the wheel and then try and get the tire moved around to where it won't need much weight. It started with the cross cracks or fuzzing and 65 miles later it was toast. The bikes handle was gone by the time we hit the last of the decent twisties..

No burn outs on this bike. HAHhaaaaaa. I think its just whacking the throttle and hard braking and being a fat bastard. I run hard in and brake hard, 95 % fronts. Only locked the rear once in that was when 3 of the 4 of us ran a stop sign by mistake in a state park in arkansas. That was only a 35 mph and a tiny slip and was a rolling or turning slide. Not a stomp it and leave it locked stop! HAhahaaaaaa.

You obviously love your riding, Bdrag, and that is cool. You might want to look into the PR2's. I'm going to after seeing Jphish's mileage.

Here's a Scorpion Trail update for you. This is after 1250 miles, 200 off road, 300 two up, the rest solo semi-spirited commuting and country roads. Very little slab.

Front: .157" new - .140" now = 89% left

Rear: .262" new - .229" now = 87% left

I'm feeling a bit more comfortable about my 2500-3000 mile ride next month!

Thanks Bdrag. 2500 seems really low, but if you only got 1800 on the syncs I think I can breath a bit easier about the Angels. I got 5000 each out of two sets of Syncs. I'm hoping to get the same or better out of the Angels. I think your results show that I can expect just that.

So you are the one with the 190 Trail? I was wondering about the tread depth new on the rear. My 150/70/17 on the Strom is right at .280 or .290 deep. Just under 5/16ths deep. I found a spec chart but it does not show the 190 yet. What width wheel is the 190 good for? How wide are our rear wheels anyway?

Use this link to look at the info on the Trails. I copied it below but use the link for the good read.

Here is a new 190 tire:

The Trail 190 is made for the Multistrada, which has a 6" wide rear wheel. The Buells have a 5.5" wide rear wheel.

That being said, 190 tire size is more than proven on the Buell wheel. Many many racers use 190's.

O.K. Mike, your gonna help me spend my money on line tonight. I am thinking of the PR2 rear but am not a fan of mix and matching brands on the front and rear. I would think that atleast same brands may have a closer compound match.

That being said, Would you go with a PR2 rear with a Pirelli Angel front thats almost new looking or would you go with a Pirelli Scorpion Trail with the Angel Front? I am leaning in the direction of the Trail keeping it like brands. WHAT DO YA THINK?

I also would prefer to stick with the same brand.

The more I look at those numbers (1250 miles = 87%), the more it looks like, on paper at least, these Trails could be 10k mile tires.

I honestly have absolutely no complaints about the trails. If they last longer than the Strada's (time will tell), then I don't know why I would ever get a different tire for either of my bikes.

Hi - Just put on Scorpion Trails last week before beginning a long trip from San Diego to Vancouver & back. They are working like champs so far! Mostly pavement, some dirt so far (in Oregon now).

If I were a tire salesman (which I am not) and I was looking at this tire for warranty purposes, I would be asking,"where are the chicken strips?", "was this bike ever put into a turn above 15mph?"

The only photo that shows any sort of wear out to the edges was photo #3 where you can see some scuffing out to the left. But otherwise, the other photos #6 especially looks as if the bike had either been ridden in a straight line for 2500 miles or you hit the local burnout contest! LOL

That being said, the photos just may not show this wear on the sides of center, or they may just be one tough tire except in the center.

Or, some of us need to show you how to start draggin bags on that Uly!! My stradas have very defined chicken strips. I just don't have the balls to get it all the way to the edge!

Good luck!

MAN! HAhahaaaaaa. I tried like hell to get a decent pic of the rounded down leading edges and the flarring up trailing edges but could not get it in focus. Lets see if another pic will show it. I will post ya a pic of me on 129 on the Strom. I do have a chicken strip as well. I can't bring myself to bust a peg yet. HAhahaaaaa. The Strom crushes the pegs.

BDRAG

Ya can see my damn chicken strip and if ya look you can see the cupping or flairing I mentioned. HAhaaaaaaa.

Strom Pic.

LC 1500 pic.

DICKHEAD! HAhahaaaaaaa. I think my main issue is we ride between 85 and 110 most of the time, I am a fat bastard and I usually have the bags on and the tall shield. All factors in killing a rear tire. I am trying to lose some weight but I cant get so thin as to not have it still be a factor! HAhahaaaaa. I also have issues with rubber on my LC and the Strom. 2500 to 3000 on the Strom is normal for a rear and 4500 on my LC 1500. DANG!

I may, MAY make a meeting in Pidgeon Forge again this year. Went last year so it will be tough to make it this year. Mid September. Ride your ass down If I am gonna make it and we can ride 129, the parkway or whatever roads ya want. Hell, we can find this one road we did that was leaf covered wet and slimmy if ya want. I almost busted my ass on the Strom on it! They are real fun! HAhahaaaaaa.

You pay the tickets and I will try and keep up. I won't know till Mid to late July weather or not I will make it. You game? HAhahaaaaaaa. Its 50-50 weather I will make it at this point. I meet about 100 others there from the LC and related sites. It will be fun if we can make it!

Hmmm - that don't seem right !! Altho I suspect weight & riding style may be factors. On the PR2s I got almost 13K out of a set (& will easily get another 2-3K) Pleasantly surprised ! I was probably about 250# with all cases loaded and waterproof sealine bag for camping/fishing gear. We ran 75-80 wherever prudent, and a bit higher in the 75-80 posted states. I don't hammer it at every start, but get up to speed pretty quickly. Chip seal roads are hell on tires - but sometimes thats what ya got. For 'road work' i'd buy another set of PR2s with NO hesitation. BTW - they held the road very well - and we rode in rain / cold weather for probably 8 of the 13K.

I plan on the PR2s most likley next. I went ahead and have a Pirelli Scorpion Trail comming. Ordered Sunday night and it arrives here Wednesday. Not bad. I don't like mixing and matching tire and if I do I like to stay with the same brand. If I can get 5000 out of a rear I would be exstatic. The PR2s may be the one.

I do know that the Trails when mounted on the Strom are 100% predictable rain or shine. So having a tire that is solid and prdictable is worth a few less miles to me. Just hard to do a bunch or riding in a short time without having to find a tire shop on a trip. Have to hub out of a safe place! AHhahaaaaaaaaa.

Bdrag - I really like the Distanzias, though they get 'mixed' reviews from others. I find they do well on both dirt & wet/dry roads. BUT - i can never get more than about 4500 mi out of rear. So my primary interest was long miles on this trip, and the PR2s exceeded expectations. And I really didnt have to give up much in the handling department. Be curious what your milage may be if ya try 'em. I don't cruise @ 110 - except for very short periods. Though 80 is not uncommon. j

Bdrag, thanks for letting me bust your ass a bit. All in fun. Those pics with the sparks kick serious ass!! I think everyone needs a photo like that of themself!

I am all about trying new riding spots, but you can keep the slimey leaf covered roads! Hell, I had my own issues with tar snakes last week. That first tar snake of the season makes the hair stand up on the neck!!

At least you are riding it. So many don't even get the miles we are seeing! I have 4 days of 0% chance of rain, so am just giggling riding the 10 miles of superslab to work!

Keep grinding the pegs bud!
