Hello folks. Long time lurker and I've even posted a few times when deciding what to buy. I ended up getting a leftover 2008 XB12X in Thrust Blue. Absolutely love it. I only need to change a few things on it.

One is a heat blanket for the crotch. Another thing is getting some new gas in it. I'm hoping that's what to blame for the slightly rough running. Also need to work on the little buzz in the handle bars. Maybe I'm running too low on the rev range. I've seen some folks suggesting running it around 4000 rpm's.

But I'll be in here quite a bit reading up on things. From what I've heard, this forum has an excellent reputation.

Greetings to neighborhood...

Install the comfort kit; your "boys" will thank you.

Can't speak or advise regarding handle bar buzz... I don't experience any adverse vibration in the bars while riding. That is not to say it's sewing machine smooth, but the vibrations experienced do not detract from the riding pleasure.

I filled my bars with clear silicone caulk, worked great on my Uly and on my honda xr 650. You will love this bike, and the more miles you put on it, the better it will behave.

It's an amazing bike . . you'll have a ball. Consider the Rider Comfort Kit. I have it on my 2008 and it works wonders.

Welcome aboard!

Keep the revs up a bit, it should run much better than if you lug it around in too high of a gear. I was trying to baby mine and rode around 2500 rpm when just cruising back & forth to work, etc. and I was getting sick of the backfiring, hiccups, etc. Now I try to keep it at 3k and higher and no more backfires & runs good. Just over 500 mi. on mine.
Funny thing is I don't remember any rough running, etc. on my '03 xb9s and I lugged that thing around a lot. But, different bike, different engine, etc.
Getting ready to put my comfort kit in soon, not sure if I'll ask for the reflash when I take it in for the 1k mi service.

Romanrider, you must ride it in town a lot then. I can't keep the revs down unless I'm in town and there are people (cagers) in the way, the bike is just too much fun! :P

I don't know how many miles you have on your bike but it may take a while to get her broke in.

Also, alot of the rough running can be attributed to the ECM learning.

I just cleaned my engine ground on the upper engine tie bar as suggested by some members here to correct a starting problem I had, and I now notice that it is running a little rough today as I have not had an opportunity to run the bike at a steady speed yet. I notice that after I do that the bike runs flawlessly.

Natek, yes mostly 40mph & below riding, although lately I've learned to stay in 2nd & 3rd gear a lot more than higher gears. Looking forward to reaching the break in point where I can exceed 5K RPM

+1 on comfort kit & a long list of other farkle options. (DO mull over pros/cons of ECM reflash before actuating - it's a permanent choice as far as I can tell) @ 27k miles my 08 {best year BTW ( :} seems to be running stronger than @ 10K. The best is yet to come - enjoy! j

Thanks for all the advice and well wishes.

Gotta get the bike broken in and get it sorted. The last time out I noticed the buzz in the handlebars isn't really all that bad. It is noticeable though. But last time out I did keep my revs up. Kept it in second gear at 30+. Some bar ends would more then likely completely remove it. It really is minor. I can feel my hands are little numb after 20 minutes of low speed riding.

Working on getting the suspension sorted as well. I'm a pretty plump guy so it doesn't look like I have a whole hell of a lot left. The rear feels fine but I think the front end needs another half twist. Don't really want to fiddle with anything more then preload but we'll see.

I notice the fan comes on when I'm riding and shuts down when I come to a stop. Not sure if that's pre-comfort kit or not. I've heard of some dealerships doing the flash without the kit.

Also there is some surging. I'm hoping that's due to the fuel being a little blah and the engine and computer being new. Its definitely improving but it still is surging a bit at the lower RPM's. It makes low speed maneuvers a little interesting.

I see a lot of folks saying go for the comfort kit. Does it make a huge difference? I noticed my crotch and legs getting a little warm the other day. Temp was around 72 degrees and the sun was out. It wasn't uncomfortable but it was noticeable. You want uncomfortable, sit on my K1100LT. Woof. Roasted freaking nuts. Nice when its chilly though.

Uh.....hmmmmm.....ah yes. Anyone know where I can get an '08 manual? I got stuck with an '07. I've already found myself running inside to check the one online.

Again. Thanks. The more I ride this bike the more I get pissed off at HD. Also at myself. I should have bought one years ago. I've wanted one ever since the Uly first came out. I've wanted a Buell for a very long time.

To keep you hands from going numb, try moving the bars closer to you or sit more forward in the saddle.

The thought of moving the bars back crossed my mind. Can't move any further forward, I sit in the pocket. Oh what a sweet sweet seat on this machine.

If that was a new left over '08 there is a good chance that a new set of spark plugs would smooth it out. Lots of folks have bought them out of the showroom, and barely made it home because of too many cold starts by sales guys letting potential customers 'hear it run'.

Once you mount up a new set, take that thing out somewhere and flog it a bit. It will appreciate you better.

My first Buell XB I did everything according to the book on slow easy break in. My Uly, well I had to do eighty to keep pace with the sales guy taking me on a demo ride on my new o mile Uly. No harm, forty eight thousand miles later, it hasn't seemed to remember.

What is really cool, is if you do ho-hum riding for a month or so, then you hook up with some fast riders for a day. You twist that thing above 4,000 RPM for a few hours, and you will have the spunkiest flying machine for a few days because of what it has learned.....awesome thing these Buells.

Congratulations - I'll cast my vote for the comfort kit as well. I haven't had the time to fit the shroud bit yet but have the R/H scoops on both my X and XT they are really very effective.
Make sure you match the damping and compression adjustments to the preload for your weight as the suspension setting guide in the manual will get you very close to the correct set-up.
It is a great bike and there is an absolute wealth of information here on Badweb.
Enjoy the summer.
