I know it's been beat to death already and I've searched through the knowledge vault, BigBad and Dirty board.

I used to own an 04 XB12S and had no problem with reading the oil level. Always did it by the book.

I recently picked up on 07 XB12X. I changed the oil, Put the 2.5 quarts as per manual. I rode it a while to let it warm up (30 min.) let it sit for 5 minutes then checked the hot oil level. It was barely registering on the dipstick. I thought how odd added a little more so it came up the the middle of the dipstick. So I've got 3 quarts in there. Stupid idea. It was coming through the intake. Took it home let some oil out. (3/4 quart to be exact)cleaned out the mess. I've rode about 200 miles and I still smell oil.

Should I be concerned or is it just some extra blowby?

I feel dumb now as I have worked on the XBs' for some time now and the oil is simple!

It will blow by, nothing to worry about. You will smell it for a while though. If it is overfilled it will keep blowing oil out till it gets to its "happy place", probably about two X's up on the dipstick. Adding more will just relocate it to the airbox.

"Adding more will just relocate it to the airbox."
Heheh. I like that turn of phrase, makes me feel better about when I decided the oil must be too low.............

Ran into the same scenario after changing the oil and filter in my '06 Uly.
After filling the new filter with oil. I poured 2.5 quarts of oil into the swing arm tank.
Started the engine and let it run for a while. When I checked the oil level, it showed about 1/4" up from the bottom end of the stick.

Oil: Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic
Filter: Mobil M103

Yep, I had one of the "Dipstick Oil" threads the other day. The situation almost makes me miss my sight glass... But knowing is half the battle, so I'm good now. I'll just keep following the manual and looking for the idiot light...
