I was wiping my dip stick on the grass to check my oil after a 80 mile ride and broke the end off, my bad! I am sure I will be shocked at the cost of a new one. Any one want to take a guess at what new one will cost? |

Now's the time to build yourself an EG Oil Temp Dipstick. Step by step directions. They last forever too. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/461500.html |

Whisperstealth. I'm not a sponsor, so BadWeb will get their collective panties in a bunch if I sell them here and that is understandable. The directions I made for making your own are pretty thorough and I even gave the vendor url for the temp probe. You can easily make your own and the cost of the probe is only about 10 bucks and shipping is free from that site I gave in the directions. Those probes hold their calibration perfectly. I've checked mine in boiling water and it always has been spot on. You can pay $80 plus for a machined aluminum one but keep in mind that the gage face on those units is puny and the aluminum gets as hot as the oil and will burn your hand without gloves. Anyway's don't be afraid to make your own. It is easy and very easy on the pocketbook. |

Mattmcc00, Oil temp readings depend on ambient temp and probably on what year of ULY you have. I'm pretty sure that 06/07 bikes run cooler oil than 08/10 bikes. Usually the oil stays under 200 F unless it is hotter than Hades outside. Mostly a fully hot 06/07 ULY will run 180 to about 200 F. I run Mobil 1 15W50 automotive synthetic from Walmart. Also, realize that your swingarm oil reservoir is also a cooler and that oil temps inside the engine get way hotter. But swingarm oil temp gives a great indication that your oil is hot enough to boil off any condensate that has built up in your oil from the combustion process. If you consistently take short trips and never get the oil up to temp then your engine will have a shorter life span because of the water condensates that join to make acids that will attack all metal parts inside your engine. Hot engine oil makes your engine happy and last. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on May 18, 2010) |
