Maximum is stranded at his first way-point in Columbia Mo. His throttle shaft broke within a couple of miles of his stop for the night. If anyone has a throttle body for an '06 Uly that he can use, anywhere near central Mo or towards Knoxville Tn. let us know asap. Post here or Pm Maximum or myself.

Steve, I thought it would be good to have it in the title of the thread on BBD also.

Bad day for a break down. With Mother's Day I think everybody's busy today. I did PM a couple of folks for help but it's just not a good day.

Response from Gateway

Hey Chris,

I had Herb look it up. He's not sure from the message what exactly is broken on the Uly. We don't have any throttle cables if that is what is broken. I encourage your stranded friend to give Herb a call directly (314-845-9900) so that he can determine for sure that we don't have the part in stock. Herb might also be able to do a dealer search to determine if any dealers on his path would be able to supply him with the necessary parts.

Thanks,

Thanks for trying Chris, that's all we can do. Not a common failure although it has happened I know.

Yeah Gateway is trying to have on hand as may parts possible so when someone has a breakdown they can get back on the road as quick as possible.

It's tough getting stuck especially when you have a deadline!

See the duplicate thread on the Quickboard- Maximum borrowed a complete throttlebody from somebody to get his bike back on the road.

The throttle shaft is not available as a separate part- you have to buy the entire throttlebody which is like a $500 part.

New12R had the throttle shaft break on his 06 Uly a while back and had a machinist make him a replacement which is stronger than the original. I linked the thread and the specific post showing his improved throttle shaft in the thread on the Quickboard if anyone is interested. It seems like (knock on wood) this problem is confined to a few 06 Uly's. If it happens to yours, you might want to look into New12R's solution.

Sorry, I had a post ready this morning stating that he got it going with the help of a BadWeB member in Oklahoma City. I had the post ready to send when I got interrupted for a while, I came back and thought I had sent it. Apparently not so.

I still don't know who from the BadWeB, trailered his Uly two hours up to where Steve was so that he could obtain the needed parts from a perfectly good Uly.

Just Awesome.

I can think of a hand full of riders as deserving as Steve to have someone step up and help him out on the road.

Kudos to the helper, may karma return the favor.

Who ended up with the bad throttle body? If you ship it to me I will make a new shaft for it. Once I get the dimensions I might be able to make a couple of them for emergencies.

Here's the photo of New12R's broken original and new replacement shaft:

The slotted shaft looks like it'll be much stronger.

Hughlysses,

Are both OEM parts?

What accounts for the difference in diameter of the threaded (in the picture, the left) end?

The top throttle shaft is one that broke on New12R's bike back about January 2009. The bottom one is one he had fabricated, based on throttle shafts used in dirt bikes he'd seen previously. Slotting the shaft for the butterfly rather than notching it leaves a lot more material which should make the shaft much stronger.

The threads look different on the bottom shaft because the two shafts are oriented differently; they're actually identical. The threaded end of each shaft has flats machined on top and bottom for the throttle cam so that it won't rotate on the shaft.

AFAIK New12R's improved throttle shaft is still going strong.

Wow, not much metal next to those threads! With the vibration of these motors and constant twisting of the shaft, that is an obvious fatigue point.

Tootal, If you make some, I'd like to have one as I have an fairly early 06 (built Jan 06) and is it happens to me I'd like to be able to repair it easily. Let me know the cost.

For you guys that want to buy a replacement shaft- note that the shaft is different on the 2007 models. The pin at the end of the shaft that engages the Throttle Position Sensor is turned 90 degrees compared to the 2006 model. That change would need to be made for the shaft to work. 2008-up bikes use a different throttle body. Check the new owner info thread for details.
