I did the headlight mod over a year ago and love it! Another free mod... Shorten your front turn signals! Free!!! 1 Take off flyscreen 2 Pull apart front turn signal connector 3 Take off nut from signal stem 4 Remove signals 5 Put it all back together with the "spacers" on the inside of the flyscreen. Done!!!!! The shorter signals look better and shake less!  (Picture stolen from post)  (Mine with signals shortened and all lights ON!) | ||

repost from awhile ago - but another option to power both high and low beams at the same time without losing the parking light feature I know it's been mentioned in other threads but since I don't see it here - if you take apart the switch assembly you'll see there's are two little notches in a piece of plastic where a spring loaded ball bearing pops down and engages for the low and high beam position. It's really simple to add another notch (dremel) right between them. Then the switch will catch halfway between the original high and low positions and both beams will be on at the same time. | ||

yes, it disables the parking light. does anyone actually use that? to use the park light you have to park with the wheel turned full left. I always park with wheel straight. I will have to do the turn signal mod. | ||

Park light is for parking on the side of the road or whatever if the bike strands you, so people on the road can see the bike and don't hit it. I assume that, by law you are required to use it if parking on the side of the road and leaving the bike. I don't plan on ever using it, but it's better to have it when you need it than need it and not have it, right? I might try looking inside of the switch box to see if some wires can be spliced, or something to get the same effect without loosing the parking light.  | ||

It's a "position light" for non-USA bikes, it's not fitted with the bulb here. | ||

I tried to do this mod yesterday and couldn't get the wires out of the plug. I kept thinking something was going to give so I gave up. What's the trick? | ||

Jim if you look at step 5a of the great writeup Speedkills made,you need to push in on the wire to release the pressure on it and gently move the tab so you can pull the wire out. I have my HIDs wired like that. Low beam off the o/w and high beam off the white. | ||

I just did mine, and I tried too hard and broke the small internal plastic catch on the orange wire. After reading this post several times, I would like to emphasize these steps: ---------------------------------- Posted on Friday, January 16, 2009 - 05:53 pm: one note of interest... in photo/step 5A be certain NOT to insert sharp pointed item (nail) into the actual terminal. There is a slot immediately above it to place the nail. This will "unhook" the terminal from the plastic plug. Otherwise you may inadvertently cause unrecoverable damage to the terminal. Mine ended up take about the advertised 15 minutes. Thanks again for this posting!! ---------------------------------- and also, this one: ---------------------------------- Posted on Sunday, March 08, 2009 - 09:33 pm: Thanks Speedkills! This is the way it should come from the factory. I had tried the middle position of the switch to turn on both bulbs, but found it very annoying. Your write-up saved the day! I used a small eyeglasses type screwdriver to release the little catch. This worked a little easier for me than the nail method. ---------------------------------- OK, I tried the nail method and ended up ruining the internal catch on the orange wire. I used a jewelers screwdriver (smaller & flatter) along with improved technique, and got the white and yellow out really easy. Based on my experience (06 Uly), I would not use a nail! The small plastic catch needs to be pulled away from the square copper "socket terminal". Note that the internal catch is just about invisible until you get the terminal out of the plug. The steps are: 1. Place the flat jewelers screwdriver next to the square copper terminal, on the outside (not the inside). 2. Gently slide the screwdriver down inside until it stops. 3. Gently pull the catch away from the copper terminal (just a millimeter is enough). This will release the square terminal 4. Gently pull the square copper terminal out of the plastic plug. If you have released the internal catch, it will slide out with almost zero force. 5. If the terminal does not want to move, STOP. The internal catch has not been released properly. Try again, gently, perhaps with a different technique. Don't force it or you will damage the plug. If you damage the plug (as I did), you may need to add separate, external plugs for the affected wires. | ||

I've got pics of the headlight mod at the switch, but I'm not sure how to post them if anybody can help... (EDIT): Tools used (less soldering iron) 4mm Allen wrench and a Phillips screwdriver:  After soldering the bridge:  All back in place:  It works!!  Be sure to check the function of all the indicators in the dash, blinkers, switches, horn, and of course the headlights. Thanks Union_man for the help on how to post the images! That's a lot of heat for those little enclosures... Those that have a lot of miles with this mod... any signs of damage to the enclosure or internal reflector? Also, if you do this mod and shorten turn signals, you should probably assume oncoming traffic can't see your turn signals, especially at night. Probably not that big a deal, as you should probably assume this anyway. |
