I'm trying to set up my Ulysses for more long distance touring. I was thinking about trying the adjustable madstad bracket and MP cycle design windshield. Anybody try this before. I really like the stock shield, but it seems like on the highway for longer trips the wind wears you out. also anyway know of any other seats. stock seat is okay for 150 miles or so but after that I'm hurting. any other thoughts or suggestions from people who have travelled long distance on the uly would be great. thanks in advance | ||

I had a tall Cee baileys shield on my "08 uly and it was great in the rain but the buffeting was terrible. I sold it. | ||

Go with the Palmer brackets, they are superior in design and don't replace your flyscreen. Windscreen is up to you, some experimentation required to find what "fits" you the best. | ||

+1 on the Palmer brackets, I find that the Uly stock seat is pretty good. Once you've got a few miles on it. It was my butt that needed to toughen up. | ||

I put Performance Engineering 1" bar risers, an '06 Low seat, a Throttlemeister, and a Zero Gravity windshield on my XT. It's good for 700+ mile days. | ||

I'm in the midst of a 22 day run around the south on my 'U' and I have to agree with Pete. Days 1 and 2 were tough on the hips, back and glutes. Now, I'm sorta bummed when the fuel light comes on. It took some time to settle in and toughen up but it was worth the price of admission once I got there. I've also found the Palmer bracket to be worth twice what I paid for it for its ease of adjustability and comfort. Its not push-button adjustable but its pretty simple and easy to fiddle with. (I'm 6'3" with a 35" inseam and ride comfortably behind the Palmer + the factory tall windscreen.) 10 days left to go... (Message edited by 7873jake on April 24, 2010) | ||

Not sure what year you have, but I put a thick sheepskin on my '06 seat and it is wonderful for all day rides. The downside is that it looks like a black bear is humping my Uly. | ||

6000 mile journey last summer on the '06 Uly and the key add-ons for comfort were seat beads, memphis shades and Palmer bracket for the windsheild.   | ||

I've never used the Palmer brackets, but I'm really happy the the Madstad ones I have on my bike. I like the idea of replacing the flyscreen - I don't like the idea of the additional stress a larger windshield would put on the existing flyscreen. As for the seat, the more you ride, the more broken in your ass will get. Although, for some reason, I get more "diaper rash" with my Uly after 5 or 6 days on the road than I have on any previous bike. | ||

I think height and weight (size of your ass to be specific) have a lot to do with how your set up for touring. At 5'9" and 160#, I can tuck in very nicely behind the stock shield with a Laminar Lip and the tank guards on my 09 XT. I added the PE 1" risers along with the Touratech hand guard spoilers when I first got the bike and use a sheepskin bad. A 14 hour day is no big deal. I will often alternate legs between fuel stops with the seat pad on or off to get a change in riding position. It's not a lot, but it makes a noticeable difference later in the day. | ||

The rolled seams on the '06 seat will drive you nuts after a few days in the saddle. The sheepskin (or beaded cover) alleviates this problem. | ||

I have the 07 stock seat on my 06 and have found that to be a great combo. I have the Madstad with tall buell windscreen and it works well. Still have noticeable wind noise in the helmet, but I use ear plugs which make it tolerable. I have tried seat beads and found I don’t like them. So when I am going to take a long ride I use bike or compression shorts under my riding pants and that helps. One thing that makes you arse give out early is heat, hot seat causes discomfort quickly, I am hoping the rider comfort kit helps in that regard for long rides. With this bike I am usually good for up to 14 to 16 hours on the bike, and depending on the ride that is somewhere from 400 to 750 or more miles. Good luck John | ||

08 XT I have the Madstad brackets, flyscreen and 18" shield. I also added the Memphis Shades to eliminate the under screen wind noise. Very happy with the results. Husky | ||

A top of the line helmet won't prevent turbulence coming off the stock XT screen and hitting me right in the head. It will reduce the noise somewhat, but not the buffeting. | ||

Hey Blackdog. Nice tankbag! I just installed the madstad bracket and 18inch screen. It (brackets) will take the wind off your chest and you will not feel beat up so much after a days ride from the wind. | ||

I have an 06 XB12X with a stock seat on it with Palmer bracket and large windshield and I rode from Portland to Missoula and the brackets and windshield worked PERFECT. I adjusted it so there is hardly any wind turbulence and I rode with my visor up and no bugs or wing got in my eyes. I am also 6'. I love my setup and the Palmer products. I also highly recommend the PIAA Cross Country HID's. The light up the road at night so you can see EVERYTHING and during the day they make sure you are highly visible. | ||

I have the Palmer bkts on my birthday list. Seat heat is a long distance killer/rash creator. The Comfort Kit helped HUGE! I am OK with my stock '06 (tall) seat now that I have the comfort kit installed. I am 6' 4", though. As for helmet noise; I have multiple helmets, included an Arai that cost more than I want to remember. It is still loud with the tall screen on stock mounting. No helmet fixes turbulence noise enough, per previous post. Earplugs are a mandatory for me for any ride of 1 hour or more. Earplugs will reduce your fatigue noticeably, if you have not tried them before. | ||

I eventually got molded ear plugs and they are sooooooo quiet. Cost $50 to have made but worth it. It is surprising how different your right and left ears are. I had them molded in different colors to keep them properly identified. | ||

Windscreen remains an issue for me on my XT. The stock screen is great for wind protection, but I get terrible buffeting noise at speed and suffered some hearing damage as a result. I tried the Palmer brackets with it, but couldn't get rid of the buffeting regardless of position. The best screen I've used is the standard one from the X, which is perfect for pleasure riding, but puts a bit too much wind pressure on my chest for long distance comfort. So my search goes on. I'm tempted to try filing the top of the XT screen down to lose the lip, but am loathed to wreck it. The Zero Gravity looks a similar height but without the lip so may give that a go. Would love to get to the bottom of this as it's the one thing making me hesitant about long distance trips. | ||

Thanks firstbatch, ordered a set. I just added a comfort kit, a big plus. No more roasted thigh. Fan not coming on either. Also the scoop seems to block some updraft in front. |
