Guys and Gals,

I am planning a longer type trip in july and will be riding 2up on my 2008 XT. Mostly two lane roads, some highway, and very little if any dirt roads. We have a combined weight including gear of about 340lbs. I hate the feeling of bottoming out and would like to eliminate that as much as possible. How do you recommend I set my suspension?


Preload?
Damp?
Rebound?

The setting are in your owners manual. For that weight, you will set you rear to max on all 3 points. For the front you can adjust to taste

All I ever do when I add a passenger ('06 UlyX, three bags, '07 fork springs, D616 tires) is crank the rear preload to max. I leave my damping alone and it works fine (I never ride as aggressively 2-up as I do solo anyway).

+1 on the settings being in the book, though.

Damping and rebound never seem to be a problem two up for me, I leave that at the setting for my weight. I just jack the rear preload knob to it's maximum setting, but we, with our luggage are quite a bit heavier than your combination.

You may not need to jack the preload knob all of the way. I would start with the knob all of the way up and back it off a couple of notches at a time if it feels too stiff.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will change the settings this week and take a longer ride 2up this weekend to see how it feels.

I've done a lot of riding with various bikes but it has always been solo. I have a more serious girl now who has taken a liking to riding but I am just a noob when it comes to riding 2up (total of just 800-900 miles 2up) Just out of curiosity how often do you guys bottom out riding 2up? Is this a pretty normal thing? Does it harm the bike or suspension?

I to could use some guidance with my suspension. I have been reluctant to play with it much even with massive break dive, until this weekend. I am 210 and she is 130. I set the front and rear to the specs from the manual and we went for a ride. While the quality is not bad compared to what I've had before, it went from pretty cushy to considerably stiffer. We rode about 100 miles Saturday, and with her on the back the front felt pretty light and was just skimming the road and sometimes not at all crossing an intersection from a stop. I was not accelerating hard, but just a normal start. I try not to get crazy with the wife on the back. It however pulled the front wheel in a low speed passing of a car in third gear. Where did I go wrong with the suspension adjustments? BTW I have an 06 X.

I am 210 and she is 150. I have it set for the 290-320 field. I ride an X though. Last guy who had it was 150. Suspension was squishy for me and the front end seemed not so sure footed. It's almost cranked to max and it works out very well. I'll probably never change anything besides the rear pre-load every so often. Loose gravel is squirelly but it does remind me of my old Lightning now

They are made by turning them all the way to maximum and then use the table to evenly turn the adjusters the required amount of turns. There is a little dimple on the adjuster for reference.
