Just got around to reading this month's issue of Motorcycle Consumer News, and came across the new (not for the U.S.) Yamaha Super Tenere. 1199 CC, 108 H.P., 84 lb.ft. torque. 6 speed tranny fed through a shaft drive. Comes with an adjustable seat height from 33.25 to 34.25", ABS brakes, tubeless spoked rims, and over a 6 gallon fuel tank. I would love to see this come to America. Looks to me like it could sell very well here. I am not looking to sell my Uly,but this Yamaha would look nice sitting next to it in my garage.

The biggest complaint over on AdvRider is the cost. They added so many farkles to make it compete with the BMW and KTM adventure bikes, that the cost is the same as well. A $20,000 Yamaha may be a bit much for much of America. Huge picture here: http://www.yamaha-motor-europe.com/designcafe/en/I mages/2010_xt1200z_eur_vpbc5_co_PS06_tcm71-359864. jpg |

There are a couple of contenders out there and none of them are available here with very few exceptions. The market here is a bit slim, I guess. It's harder to see the market clearly when you ARE part of it. I for one make up an even smaller market. I want a big dual sport with no electronics at all. No ABS, injection, BAS, ECM nothing. Gimme a CV carb and a magneto. A very simple charging system to top it off. Rock solid reliability and systems that can be repaired on the side of the road with a Leatherman if needed. To me, there is nothing like the feeling I get while on a lonely mountain road in the middle of nowhere when I know for certain that if something shit the bed I can fix it and get back underway. On the other hand if while riding a bike with these electronic systems running the show say, oh, lets say my ECM went out. (It happens and did happen to me.) No cell ph signal. Night time. This could be a life threatening situation. I want the confidence to likely NEVER be a pedestrian. Unfortunately for me, aint nobody making a bike like that and the opposite is much more certain. The only way I'll get the DS I want is to build it or modify a current offering. Buell's closing and the eventual drying up of parts answers the question of which bike to build on for me. As time and money permit, I'll be converting my Uly to a more basic, simple machine. |

The Yamer is a nice looking bike though. The styling is simple. It is a shame that we most manufactures think that americans only want cruisers or crotch rockets. Well, may be most only do. |

Look at where all the weight is carried! It is like looking at the woman with the 60EEE breasts! All the weight is on top, I mean it is kinda interesting to look at but you wouldn't want to ride it for very long when things got curvy. |

Panhead, you need to ding yourself an old Cagiva Elephant. In addition to all the farkles, like the GRA, the Super Tenera weighs nearly 600 lbs. |

Hangetsu 575 Wet weight as opposed to 475 for the XB12X With the extra gas, coolant, panniers, etc it's not a shocker of a weight increase imo. Swampy Funny you should say that, look at this bullet from their site: "Mass kept low and central for agile handling." Minus the 6 gallons sitting high, I think having the engine lower probably lowers the center of gravity over having the muffler lower in all honesty. Plus they still managed to keep the muffler low. All in all nice bike that will probably never make it to the states. And for 20k I can name a few others I'd rather have to compliment my Uly in the garage. Plus I wouldn't use that bike for it's intended use either. Uly is a street machine and that's what I'm looking for |

the Super Tenera weighs nearly 600 lbs. That's what spoiled it for me. Though seeing as Yamaha will probably never bring it to the US anyway, I probably shouldn't care. There is still some hope. Aprilia will supposedly be introducing a trailie with a 21" front hoop based on their sweet looking Dorsoduro (a bike I would own NOW if it didn't have an unacceptably small 3-gallon tank... grrrr.) platform and 750cc twin. Should be a click under 10K if the price of the Shiver and Dorsoduro are any indication. Sorry Panhead_Dan: It would have 4-valve OHC, fuel-injection, selectable fly-by-wire throttle, an alternator, a starter and a battery all standard. Dorsoduro
