Bought a new '09 X on Oct. 14, great timing! Had comfort kit and flash done...now 1,600 miles and the fan has never run....most miles in 40/50's so I figured too cold and no need to run....now in last two days I have run in mid 60's and today in low 70's, still no fan while running or when shutdown....sound right???
I had an '06 and the fan ran lots and always on shutdown. I am puzzled??

My '06 fan ran a lot... until I put the comfort kit on (back in oct/nov)... I didn't hear the fan again until a few weeks ago.. when it got near 80.

I actually hooked up the ecmspy in early march to make sure it still worked.

No flash done.. but the fan definitlely runs much less.

Use ECMspy and run the fan diagnostic to confirm its working, but it probably is and you just haven't noticed it.

Thanks, it just seems very strange for the fan not to have run even once. I'll have it checked out. Appreciate the advice.

I have the same bike(09X) w/ everything you've mentioned and I've ran it in the same temps as you,and the fan runs all of the time over 15mph does'nt matter how cold it is outside..Open your fuse box under the seat and check the fan fuse..It has it's own fuse..Surely something wrong,it should be running, maybe froggy is right, you just aren't noticing..I can hear it around 35-40mph..

Checked fuse it is good....pretty sure I could hear fan running as I was pretty used to it on the '06......seems odd it has never run on shutdown. Will have dealer check it out, but it is a 300 mile roundtrip to Great Falls from my place. In reading posts here since the kit came out, it seems some have your experience and others say the fan runs much less...not sure why there would be such wide variation in fan run time?

I just put an EBR ecm(w/ new fan logic) on my 09x, and the fan rarely comes on at shutdown. In 4000 miles w/ the new ecm, the fan has come on after shutdown maybe 6 times. You probably don't have a problem, its just too cool for the fan to come on. If it runs over 15 mph, you're good.

If you have the "Rider Comfort Kit Update"(which is 30-40 dollars)the fan WILL NEVER COME ON AFTER SHUT DOWN,it always did before the update, but not after..It only comes on above 15 mph and w/the cyl head a certain temp(which is really low)..When it was 40-50 out it only took it about 5-10 min until the fan started running all of the time unless you are below 15 mph..

Idaho Buelly, checked it out again today (75 degrees) and you are right on the money, it is running above 15 mph....with the comfort kit it is way quieter than my '06....I really had to listen to determine it was running....anyway, thanks again, all is well and I must have the Rider Comfort Kit Update as it performs exactly as you described. I never heard it running until today.

Mtdan,
Great to hear it's working the way it should..I wrote to EBR to see if they could make a change on the ECM to have the fan come on at 15mph(like it does) and shut off at say 50mph due to unnecessary fan usage since there should already be enough air flow above 50mph(I would think),but they said they could not change it and they talked w/the guy(engineer)that actually did the testing for Buell and he stated that the fan did not fail any sooner then the previously updated models(which I see is somewhere around 25-30,000 miles)..So I guess we'll see....Hey it looks like I'm gonna be heading your way(Montana)Wisdom to be exact for fishing the "Big Hole" river in late June..

I have a 2008 XB12X and since flashing I have never noticed the fan turning on as I ride. HOWEVER, it has turned on after parking it on rare occasions.

I had a fan fuse blow today! I notice the fan is running all sorts of different speeds when running, like it is dragging down.

I am asking, Rotating the engine is necessary to get to the fan?

No, you can get to it from behind

(Thats what she said : D)

Jack up the bike by the muffler, disconnect rear shock, and pull it out

I have a 2010 XB12X, fan rarely ever runs... I thought it was because of the new programming... then the check engine light came on. WTF. took it to the dealer to get ... harassed for the recall on the foot peg, that none of the dealers near me ever heard of... it worked for them. again I say wtf!

Since when is an over temp light? The bike will go into skip spark mode if it was overheating.

Swampy,

If yours has the comfort kit then it is the first fan replacement I have heard of since the installation of the comfort kit. I will be interested in your comments on the replacement difficulty with the comfort kit.

If you don't have the comfort kit installed then this would be a good time to do it. I replaced my fan when installing the comfort kit since the work is in the same area.

Dropping the rear shock is required (one bolt I think) and some of the fan connector wires are just barely long enough so you may have to lov'em up a little to get everything reconnected just right.
