So as dumb as it may have been, I let my brother ride my Uly today as he was in from Nashville and wanted to ride it. I stayed home to watch WSBK and MotoGP, but my dad went with him for a ride. I get a call from my dad and it's bad news, my brother crashed my bike.

He is fine and was wearing gear so he will just be sore for a little while. My uly, however did not fair as well. From what I can tell the damage is as follows:

-Right side controls trashed
- Bars bent
- front piece (cast aluminum) is cracked
- right side and top pannier are trash
- mounting frame for the pannier is bent from impact on right side
- other minor scratches, etc.

Here is the kicker...He only has liability (i did not know this at the time) so he won't be covered. Even if my policy covers it (which it probably won't) I don't want to claim it because I have a previous total on my record from a crash on a different bike that happened at the race track.

I would be SOL, but my dad is going to cover my repairs/new bike, whichever it ends up being. My brother will slowly pay my dad back because he doesn't have lots of money right now.

So what would you do? Fix it up and ride it? Or sell it and recoup what you can and buy either another Uly or another bike. With the market for Buells kinda crazy now, what do you think I could get for it? I am sure pics will help and I will post some up eventually.

Today has sucked, but all in all it could be worse. Bikes can be replaced, brothers can't.

You would sell a bike over about $500 in damage?

Fix it! Kick his ass, then drive his bike off a cliff.

$500? I am sure it would be more than that. Panniers alone are much more, but I guess aftermarket ones would be much cheaper...Plus I would have to get the frame and forks checked for straightness, etc..

Yep, here is a few of the part numbers going off your limited description. If you want to count every single knicked thing it will add up more.

90092-05Y SIDECASE,RH Retail Price:$286.95
92049-05Y TOP CASE Retail Price:$274.95
90089-05Y BRACKET,RH,SIDECASE XB12X Retail Price:$83.00
N0037.4AKYBP HANDLEBAR ASSY, GRAPHITE GREY Retail Price:$74.95

Those are full retail prices, get them cheaper from Badweb sponsor Precision Harley, or get them used. Without pictures I couldn't even tell you what you really need or not, what can be repaired, etc. : )

Here are some pictures...

Additional items that would need to be replaced that weren't mentioned or priced by Froggy (thanks!)
- front cast aluminum piece (what is this called?)
- minor stuff that I don't need prices on include handguard, grip, mirror, right switch pod, possibly brake lever, right turn signal

I suppose if there isn't any frame/swingarm damage that compromises the bike it wouldn't be too expensive to fix it up.

Should I try to go to a local motorcycle repair shop or a certified buell dealer for a wreck estimate to check the frame, etc?

Thanks for the help guys.

Ouch! A little worse than I imagined. Yea, your going to have to increase your budget a bit. The front fairing brackets - It is 4 pieces, once you tear off the flyscreen you can see which ones are damaged and what survived. Giving the bend in the plastic flyscreen, I would venture to guess the left one at least survived.

L0940.1AKYBP BRKT,SUPPORT,FAIRING,LH,GRAPHITE GREY Retail Price:$46.00
L0941.1AKYBP BRKT,SUPPORT,FAIRING,RH, GRAPHITE GREY Retail Price:$46.00
L0941.1AKYCX BRCKT, FAIRING BRKT,SUPPORT,FAIRING,CENTER,GRAPHITE GRE Retail Price:$46.00
(One more piece under the flysceen holds headlight)

For the minor parts I would need to get a parts book to look up for. I would check to make sure all the lights still work, including the heated grips.

I highly doubt the frame was tweaked, it is strong and very stiff. Usually the damage to them is a dent where the rubber frame puck lays.

Cintronben

I have Progressive on all three bikes. I asked and was told that a QUEST RIDER can operate my bikes as many as 12 times per year. I asked if I swapped bikes for a day on a trip if my bike was covered if they fell over and was told absolutly 100%.

So if ya have progressive, call them and be done with it.

Glad Brudda is o.k. Now when he gets well, KICK HIS AS.

Bought a parts manual to go with the service manual after I dropped mine (deer strike). Very handy as it has exploded diagrams of all the pieces - answers lots of questions that the service manual doesn't address. Metric motorcycles in Houston (Racetech certified) reworked my forks to make sure bike was ok - I'd highly recommend his work.
Fix it - you'll never feel the same about the bike, but you can get most of the love back.
Good luck!

Ulynut, I am not quite sure which part you are referring to? Which part is the wind deflector?

Bdrag, I may be covered, but I have already had a complete loss motorcycle on another bike with a different insurance company. I fear that if I even could claim it, my rates would skyrocket making it much more expensive in the long run.

Ddaleuly, that is a good idea. Perhaps I should pick a up a parts manual and service manual so I can figure out everything that would need to be ordered.

I always find the discussion about "To Claim, or Not to Claim" interesting.

I carry "Full Coverage" insurance so that if I crash I pay my $250 and ride on!

Here is a link that helped me understand some of the insurance terminology.
http://www.russbrown.com/motorcycle-insurance.html

BTW
If you have not shopped insurance in awhile, I would do it soon!
I saved $120 this year by shopping around. I also increased my coverage and lowered my deductible in the process.

Union_man, I would normally agree with you, but it is a different situation. My dad is willing to pay for the repairs and have my brother pay him back. I told him it wasn't his fault, but he insists on doing it. Eventually the cost will get back to my brother.

Ulynut, oh, thanks for the explanation. How bad is the rash? How much? Thanks!

Looks like it might be worse off than I thought. I had it brought to a dealership for a wreck estimate and apparently I will be needing a new right fork, and new upper and lower triples. Will find out more once I pick up the full estimate. I don't know what I am going to do...looks like it might cost a lot more than I thought and I might be better off selling it for parts/repair. I will post up the estimate so I can get your input as soon as I get it.

I know with my wreck I had last week that even a little damage can cost a lot. If you are going to get the repaired and do it yourself you might look on ebay as there are several Uly's being parted out on there

I understand the Pope is looking for a few good candidates for the Casstrati choire. Perhaps your brother could volunteer. Besides that these bike are realy tough and you should have it back in great condition soon. As I was instructed by a professor once and sometimes tell my patients, "If it is in the future a funny story, it is funny now". It is just a possesion your brother is irreplaceable.

First glad to hear your brother will be ok
Second as far as the bike you'll be able to figure out something just depends on how much you liked the bike, sounds like you might want to try something else, and last but not least the old kick his ass attitude is sorry but BS! You let him ride the bike and things can and do happen.Almost 40 yrs ago I was told NEVER let someone ride your bike because SHIT HAPPENS! I still live by that rule today.

So here is my modified version of the wreck estimate provided by the dealer. They performed it as if it was for an insurance company so everything with a scratch on it was included. I went through and selected everything that is essential to get it in good, safe, running order and make it cosmetically acceptable. It is still a little more than I was expecting, but nothing too crazy...

Things left off that will need to be assessed once they are off the bike include both wheels for straightness (have some deep scratches) and possibly the footrest support piece. It may be bent too far in to accept the pannier bracketry, but I will be able to tell better once I get it off.

Sorry to hear this Ben, At least Beemer offered to lend you his bike till yours is fixed. : )

I would bite the bullet and get the parts. Will you be doing the work yourself? This sounds like a great opportunity to learn your bike, a lesson on how the front end of your Buell goes back together. Which is invaluable should you ever find yourself alive after low siding on the death road in Bolivia... completely hypothetical situation of course. http://listverse.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/death -road.jpg

I think those foot peg supports are cast aluminum... so if there was any evidence it was bent or took an impact, I'd replace it.

Reepicheep, that is a good point. It looks like it is either cast aluminum or possibly the same magnesium that the subframe is made of?
