Everything I've read it seems like what I'm looking for. My only concern is how this gearing is on long trips and Iron Butt type riding. Does the gearing wear on you?

I don't need to go faster than 80 pretty much ever, but, I really want to get there faster!

Check it out for yourself.

4th gear at 80 mph with the 12 is the same as 5th gear at 80 mph with the 9 primary conversion.

Does that make sense?

Yea just ride around without hitting 5th gear, that will simulate the XB9 gearing except for you won't experience the extra low first gear. The ratios are pretty close to what they would actually be with the XB9 conversion. Personally I wouldn't do it if you slab that much, hell I want to go the other way on mine and add taller gearing to reduce the cruising RPM more.

hell I would love to run a granny gear for puttin off road.... when is that XL 6 from Baker gonna get more cost effective?

I agree with both Cityslicker and Froggy : )
I would like a crawler first gear for traffic and stump jumping and also an extra tall top gear.
You know, a first gear that you wouldn't use under normal driving?

As it was shipped, it is quite good though.
If I had the cases split at any time, I would probably look into playing around with the ratios a bit.

My vote would be for an XB9 tranny with a 6th gear. That would be perfect for me and my Uly.

I called my dealer and asked. He is waiting for a call back from Baker. I think he said The catalog shows for Buell through 1997.

I see Baker makes different size front sprockets also. Wonder if they make one that is one tooth smaller.

The Baker only works on Sportster based Buell's. Also, they cost about as much as a used Uly, so they aren't even worth the price of admission.

It is "probably" only a matter of time before Harley upgrades Sportsters to a 6 speed tranny. That is the way they get customers to buy the new bikes. New and improved.

4000 RPM is approx 80 miles per hour in 5th with XB12 gearing. I noticed lower measurably lower fuel economy during my testing by keeping the bike in 4th.

As Thrux181 said, 4000 is 75 mph with XB9 gearing. 4th gear w/XB12 gearing is 70 mph. 4th gear will be close to XB9 gearing but not exactly. I show 3800 rpm at 70 mph w/XB9. My bike is smoother at that rpm than the stock 3400 rpm at 70 mph. It does not wear on you at all and my mileage is roughly the same. The direction of the wind would have more effect than the gearing. If you do off road or city riding I highly recommend it. If you slab it all the time I wouldn't mess with it. If your passing on the interstate there is no wait for speed with the lower gearing, it's point and shoot, I love it.

Tootal is on the right track -- I am fortunate enough to have both an XB9S and a Uly. Fourth on the Uly is a bit shorter than than fifth on the 9. It's close, but not quite the same. I have the kit to change my Uly, and will report my findings when I take that step.

Got my kit...just waiting to see how I really ride this thing. I was blessed with two months in AZ this winter...really got my mojo going...lot of town (wishing for XB9) and not wishing on the highway...but needing to slow down. That bike just wants to RUN like a thoroughbred. Thinking the XB9 would keep me at reasonable highway speeds. Saw 3 bad bike accidents on the highway while riding. God is telling me something.

What Tootal said. My gas mileage didn't change. Where I'am at, it averages around 45 mpg. Eulysses, It does keep me closer to the "speed limit" now. I can't remember the parts needed. If someone doesn't have that handy, let me know and I will go dig around in the paper work.

Here's a link to the thread I did when installing mine. The torque on the crank nut is different/upgraded from the manual so read the whole thread and get the updated info before putting it all back together.

How about tossin' the rubber band and putting a chain on ? I've done it to four and will be making it five real soon. The Uly is the only belt I have left and I hate it.
