If I did that I would have to have a urinal installed too. :-) But I would love to have that much fuel on board...even for running around town...less stops for fuel as the days go by. Thanks for the details. I saved em.

I had to put a loop in the vent line.... every time I pulled a wheelie.... or took off fast a little fuel would come out.
The little loop made all that stop.

Is that a five gallon on the back of yours? Any issues with all that weight back there, or stress on the rack?

These look sweet! I wonder... has anyone tried putting one of these tanks inside the top box? Looks like the 3 gallon might fit or maybe two-2 gallon tanks? Would be incognito if you didn't notice the lines.

This maybe a project for me this coming winter! Buy an extra top-box and mount the fuel cells inside that box permanent. A box for long trips, a box for more storage, think it could work? Sometimes I ride with Goldwings around 240 miles to a tank for them...

I bought a fitting and ran a die over it so it would work + some teflon tape.... I am good to go.

No, its a 4.5 and I only put 4 gallons in it at a time.
Once the fuel light comes on, I will ride for about 20 more miles and turn the petcock and dump the 4 gallons.
When I stop to get gas I make sure the petcock is closed and I put 4 gallons in the Tourtank and then top off the bike.

There was a thread some time ago about a guy that put that tank inside a top case. He decided to remove it because of fumes collecting in the top box.

You could probably find the thread with a search.

The Badweber who put the Tourtank in the top box was BienHoa Bob. He rode in the 2006 Team Strange ButtLite 4 that I rode in, and his was the first fuel cell on a Uly I'd ever seen. Not sure if he still posts here, as he got rid of the Uly for an ST1300 last fall or so. I believe, from that thread, that Bob re-tapped his fuel pump to accept a more standard fitting. I was not going to do that, because of fear I'd screw it up, and also if I want to go back to stock if I sell the bike. The fitting really was the biggest PITA of the whole project.

I used Permatex Grey sealant on the elbow and hose barb. I've used it on aux fuel tank fittings before, and it works great.

I agree, putting it in the top box is a bad idea for several reasons.

1. Fumes, as discussed before.
2. Why chop or cut up an expensive piece of luggage?
3. You'd have to unlock the box every time you wanted to get gas, which would waste time.

I don't intend on running the cell all the time. Just for rallies and such when I want the extra range. I like having my trunk.

If you want your cell to be a little more incognito, you could always contact Tank Bags by Linda. She makes some pretty cool bags to conceal fuel cells with pockets and water jug holders and other neat things. Her stuff isn't cheap, but it's top notch (I don't have one, but I've seen many of them).

That said, I've never had an issue, other than general curiousity with running an aux fuel tank. I've crossed into Mexico and Canada with nothing more than a "what's that" from border guards. The only time it really got a second look from authorities was crossing Hoover Dam in the ButtLite.

I found the thread, Not a lot of detail just he had fumes, and there was suppose to be a picture on the site, of the tank in the box. Found one in a top box but it wasn't even a Buell...
I was looking at the tank bag covers, but that's not my taste. Thinking about it, I don't want to be limited by the box anyway or take it off the bike when I tour. Thanks guys!

I was pretty set on getting the 4 gallon offset tank from Tourtank:



But I just found this setup:


It's intriguing.
The tank holds 4 gallons and is only $119 from Jegs.http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/15378/10002/-1 They're local so I could go pick one up tomorrow if I wanted to.
Mounting will be a little more difficult (doesn't come with straps or anything), but would still be doable.
Cost would be about $100 less than the Toutank.

5 gal hinged in the back; 1 quick disconnect and 2 bolts and I can get under the seat if needed. 5 gal is way overkill but I had it sitting on the shelf from a previous bike.

That Summit cell is what I originally had on my Concours, until I was informed that it exceeded the 11.5 limit for rallies. It's probably still my favorite design because you don't need straps.

The 1000cc Connies had a 7.5 gallon stock tank. Still, I'd usually hit reserve around 220 miles (never risked it too far after reserve, so I don't know how far I might have gone). The Uly gets better mileage.

Where I ran into a snag (or rather, would have, had a kind fellow rider not informed me), is that Team Strange does not just count fuel capacity of your tanks, but any fuel that could be in the lines, filters, etc. 7.5 plus 4 plus lines and filters puts you over 11.5. Unlike some folks have done in the IBR, they didn't allow any kind of displacement devices either, so rather than risk being forced to remove it, I went with the smaller Tourtank.

Still lurking on the outside perimeter.
You guys are spot-on with your fuel cell write ups. I cringed when drilling holes in my top case when mounting the tourtank. Then I drilled even more holes for venting, only to toss out the idea when I smelled gas fumes.
For my IBA rides I wound up with a 5 gal tourtank. The top case rack held up fine. It even went through two falls with not damage at all. (Side bags took the brunt of the hit).

I just finished mounting a 3.5 fuel cell on my ST 1300. (7.7 + 3.5= 11.2gal) I'm getting ready for a 100cc ride in May. Going to try and push it even a little further and do a SS5000 at the same time. (100cc = 100 hrs to go from Jacksonville Beach, Fl to San Diego, Cal. back to Jacksonville Beach. SS5000 = 5 days, 5,000 miles).


Still have a Buell by the way, only it's a city X now.

Alright! I picked up just about everything I need today.
1x Jegs 4 gallon fuel cell $119
(comes with foam and rollover valve)
3x Jegs Fittings $15
1x Jegs Fuel Filter $10
1x 3/8" Shutoff Valve $10
5' 3/8" Fuel Line $7

Last part needed is the adapter for the Fuel Pump.



I plan on making it 'quick release' on the triple tail like so:


But it fits surprisingly well in the rear box if someone wanted to do that.


I'm planning on removing the helmet lock and bolting the shutoff valve right in there.

Doing a IBA Top Down (Angle Inlet, MN to Key West, FL) in May. This will be my first IBA ride on the Uly.

Also entered in the Minnesota 2010 (2-day rally, instead of the usual 24 hour Minnesota 1000) in June.

My wife is probably not pleased with what tires will be costing me this summer...
