Not that I'm in a hurry to switch out, but I was thinking, if I found that the Uly had gotten too long in the tooth, where would I go next? A year ago, the answer would have been "a new Uly" but we know that's not possible. Where'd you go for that grunt and visceral feedback? Certainly not the 1200GS, that telelever front end is doesn't give anywhere near the road feel. I like my Triumph Scrambler, but it's no Uly, especially on the pavement. Duc Monster? Never been on one, can't say. Some of you have surely given this some thought...so what are you thinking?

Well, on the pricey side, sweet on paved roads, OK on dirt roads, grunty, and certainly visceral...

A Moto Guzzi Stelvio
A Ducati Multistrada 1200

Slightly less expensive, with more off road DNA, still visceral with a potent engine...

KTM 990ADV

I bought a Moto Guzzi Norge. I'm not planning on doing a lot of off road with it though. I am planning on riding it from Massachusetts to Oregon in June, though.
It's a pretty neat bike. It has some strong points over a Buell, while the Buell has some strong points over the Guzzi.
Since I like air cooled pushrod V twins that handle, it's pretty much the best choice for me.

I am very interested in testing out the new KTM SM-T. sounds and looks like a fun bike, uses the LC8 engine which according to what I have read is bullet proof. Also the WP suspension is reportedly great. My problem is that as I am getting closer to retirment the price of the KTM looks a little steep to me. After the Uly I will never again get a bike without the full three way suspension adjustment. When tuned in properly boy it is just great. The other choice I am toying with is a used Wee strom (that is the 650 version). It is light nimble has more than enough power for me. I used my wifes last fall for the 10 day excursion I take with friends, due to bad fork seal leak on Uly the day before trip. I was very impressed with the bikes handling, power (only needed to downshift once in the mt.s in Vermont), comfortable, but wil need to upgrade suspension (see above). I would only get an 08 or newer model due to refinements. Following the thread on the Strom board seems like a number of folks are trading back to the little strom from the big one for the handling weight etc. This bike by suzukie seems to be vertually no maintanence and no problems. again retimrent looming and dependablity and longevity of bike a concern.

Certainly not the 1200GS, that telelever front end is doesn't give anywhere near the road feel.

Based on my extended R1200GS LE test ride, the big GS can be hustled along a paved road quite quickly, and with confidence. Not saying it handles like the Uly, but IMHO it was pretty nice on the tarmac.

I already have a 1200GS along with the Buell XT. If I were to give up the Buell I'd be 100% 1200GS. I love the Telelever front end. I have a new 2010 on order by the way.

Also BMW and Buells are 2 motorcycles that are easy to maintain.

Saw one at the shop this weekend. Black with D&D cans on it. It sounded and looked wicked.

next week, who knows.....

If Yamaha brings the new Super Tenere stateside, I'd probably give that one a shot. Otherwise, it would be a tough call for me between the new OHC 1200GS and the KTM 990 Adventure. I'd have to go back to the KTM I think.

I plan on picking up a wr250x as my commuter in order to keep my Uly longer. I hope I am still riding the Uly in ten years.

I would probably find a low mile Ulysses if I really could wear one out anyway...by then the choices would be much different.

Well when the day comes that the Uly is so worn down that it isn't everyday reliable I will:

1: try to find all the parts to restore everything.

2: find a low mileage second Uly

3: KTM990 Adv.

Strange how HD thought we would all flock their way when our bikes wore out.

haha the leather clothing thing is funny! Want to know something more funny than that? I went into a Harley Store yesterday. They did not sell any leather! weird.

back on topic I don't know what type of bike I would consider over the Buell. It's so in a world of it's own it's hard to compare anything that is similar.

I did have a KTM Duke II at once time. It was fairly similar but was scary on the interstate. It was a hoot though!

Damned if I don't dread chain oil & valve adjustments though.

When I bought the Uly last year, my second choice was one of the V-Stroms, probably the 650. The Uly won out though mainly because of not having a chain, and not requiring valve adjustments.

The GS1200 would be nice, but it's out of my price league.

Since I have a new 2010, I hope not to be answering this question for quite a while. By the time I need or want to replace my XT I am hoping that there is a new Buell Motorcycle Company in some shape or form and they are making something similar to the XT. By then I may want more wind protection, so I maybe they will have something with that feature.

If I had to replace my XT today and another Uly was not available, I'd look at the 1200GS (too rich for me though), the Ducati Multistrada (probably too rich for me also), and for something different, the Yamaha FJR. Oh, and I'd look at the Triumphs as well. But, barring an accident, I won't be looking for many years to come.

My Uly has to make it until my Daughter goes through collage.

By then I hope to be looking at EBR's replacement for the ULY

I would see a Gold Wing and an XL650 to cover my needs, where the Uly does both with ease.

Testing a Tiger might be necessary.

I would try to lock down a second Uly as a first choice though.

I'm reading up on the new Multistrada and am getting some dangerous feelings inside. But the cost! I think my local dealer has one of the old Multis on the floor - maybe there's a deal to be had. I'll probably rent a GS sometime this year and see how those are. But the cost!

Interesting...no one has mentioned anything in a BMW RT or K series. Too expensive? Too plush? Too staid? Not enough of a hooligan personality? Most of us are still aiming at dual sports or almost-dual-sports.
