Hi all,
My comfort kit just arrived and the dealer wants to charge me for the ECM flash. He siad that it was a separate order and is not part of the comfort kit? I thought that it was.

what about your experiences?

I was charged 1/2 hr. labor to install it, the flash itself I was not charged for. But this was before HD (spit) dropped Buell.

Yes half hour labor is the norm for getting a reflash on its own. Typically it is lumped in with everything else, so its in your best interest to do it when you are getting some other service done.

what about getting the dealer to install the comfort kit versus doing it myself?

I heard that it can be tricky to get the fan cowling in place.

wonder how much he would charge to do so, probably save on ECM labour.

Matt, was the dealer your talking about a Buell dealer, or always just an HD shop? If always just an HD shop how far to a shop that was a Buell dealer as well? Former Buell dealers are sometimes way cooler than HD only shops.

Find out how much to install it. If only a 1/2 labor, you might want to go for it. Half to install, half to flash might be worth it to you.

I have my comfort kit, but have not installed it. I do have the most recent flash. I'm waiting for the cold weather to be done. I have a trip to Minnesota in April and have a feeling the warmth could be helpful.

Anyway, there are very detailed directions right here on BWB w/pics on how to do it. It makes for a great learning opportunity I think. Many say after adding the comfort kit, they didn't need to reflash. If I had, had my choice I would have waited until after install to see the results and then decide to reflash or not.

Good luck!

Hey...if you have an 09 ECM I will trade you mine (reflashed) for no cost to you. I have 2000 miles. Made Mar/09. I live in WA, left coast. In fact, I will give you $35 on the trade.

My reflash was free (I regret getting the flash, but that's another topic) probably due to the fact that I ordered the comfort kit the day I bought the bike. Drop $8k at a dealer and they seem to not care about getting 1/2 hr labor out of you

As for the comfort kit install, I opted to do it myself. The RSS and heat shield parts are very quick jobs. I haven't installed the cowl piece yet and don't plan on it until I experience some type of heat-related discomfort from the seat. It does look tricky though, so hopefully this seat stays cool as the weather warms!

The dealer I bought my kit from told me $115 to $150 to flash the ECM.

Hi all,

Thanks to all of your posts on the installation of the kit I have installed the full kit, fan cowling and all, in a little over 2 hours. I guess the trick was not to unscrew the frint ECMscrew , but rather to just loosen it. The hardest part was remembering which screw went where.

I still can't get the last 2 underside trunck screws in though. Seems like my panniers racks does line up with the holes very well.

So the dealer sent me to talk to the service guys... they had no clue what I was talking about when I said comfort kit reflash!! they gave me a date to flash the ECM, stating that they have already flashed ECM before (probably never on a Buell), but thats it?? not a word on the ECM, do I need to procure this? do they? do I have to replace the module or is it just a software thing? will they have to undo the tricky front screw on the ECM and if so will they be able to screw it back in?

My dealer is a HD dealer that also used to sell Buells and BMW, but they don't seem to know anything other thatn BMW and HD!

The dealer I went to did not charge to do the flash update, and I did the install of the kit myself.

The reflash costs seem to vary, in Portland OR, one dealer charges $55 the other $0 if the bike is still under warranty. I still have not got the reflash on my 09 that I installed the comfort kit on. Waiting until some hot summer days to make the final call. Am pleased with the kit so far w/o the reflash

We reflash for free as long as there is a service being done or a part installed that requires it. If someone just wants their bike checked, I do it myself so I don't have to charge for a tech. We basically check every Buell for updated software whenever we touch them. We also check every VIN for open recalls.
