I've got a set of rear wheel bearings that I carry on my Uly. If I were to be away from home, and experienced a rear wheel bearing failure, can I count on any HD dealer to be able to install them? I just don't see wheel bearings as a roadside repair item, and on a long trip, I'd be more comfortable knowing any HD dealer would do it. | ||

I would bet that ANY bike shop would be able to do the work. Would HD warranty Wheel Bearings if within the warranty period. I have 18 months of warranty left.... BDRAG | ||

If it's not a Buell dealership, then they do not have to help you. That being said, if you are in need of some serious help on a trip, most dealerships (Buell, harley, japanese, or italian) should be willing to help out. I've found that entertaining them with stories of your travels and troubles is a great way to sway the decisions of those that can help you. Edit: Bdrag was slightly faster than I. I agree, most bike shops would probably install the bearings. I plan to take the service manual with me in an effort to 'try' and avoid screw ups. | ||

HD dealers (non-Buell) are contractually not allowed to work on Buells. They may still help you, but you can't count on it. Just about any other bike dealer/power sports shop should be able to do it.  | ||

"contractually not allowed "? Wow! Did you mean that because they didn't contract with Harley to support Buells they cannot do Buell warranty work or order Buell parts, which I think is true? I cannot see how they would be "contractually not allowed" to work on Buells. Just askin' but . . . . . | ||

My local dealer is not Buell, however they will do everything except warranty work. | ||

Thanks for the responses. "I plan to take the service manual with me in an effort to 'try' and avoid screw ups." Not a bad idea, especially if using a non-Buell dealer. Too bad the service manual isn't available on a CD. Maybe scanning pages into the netbook would be as good. | ||

Semanitcs. "Non-Buell" Harley-Davidson dealers are certainly allowed to work on your bike. But they may not order Buell parts (they don't have access to the system since they aren't a Buell dealer) and they can not perform warranty work. | ||

My "non-buell" Harley dealer has been great for doing work on my two Buells over the years. But all I have used them for is tire changes, clutch cables, oil changes etc. The little stuff that I should do myself but have little time to do. That being said, I see no reason why they could not do bearings if they can get the rear wheel off. The trick is that crazy hex adapter they need for the rear wheel. I would guess not many have that tool. Warranty work goes to the dealer I purchased from. I'm glad to see they were not one of the dealers that dropped Buell weeks before the announcement of the shutdown. You know that those dealers got word of the shut down and thought they would save themselves from supporting Buell afterwards. "COWARDS" We all know who they are! | ||

The problem is I have read that when the bearings fail, it is more than just the bearings that need replacing. Sometimes the whole wheel need replacing. | ||

If you are carrying spare bearings you should be carrying the spacer too. The hex tool should be under your seat in the tool bag. | ||
