A little history on my '06 Uly:

Put a Drummer muffler on the bike at about 1500 miles and drilled open the inner airbox, '07-style.

Added a K&N filter and a regular ol' Buell race ECM at 5900 miles, in 6/2009.

About 2 weeks ago (just over 11k) pulled the Drummer muffler off, because the drone was killing me on longer rides - and my CR reminded me how *nice* a quiet bike can be.

Rode it for a couple days like that - stock muffler, wired open; K&N filter; open inner airbox; race ECM. Quiet is niiiiice...but it was a dog. With the stock muffler on there, I was starting to notice pinging - and it's only 65 degrees or so, and I have the comfort kit installed. Riding 2-up this evening, it was REALLY a dog, and REALLY pinging.

Hm.

Got home, found the old stock ECM. Reinstalled it and hooked the muffler back up to the valve motor.

Now....waaait for iiiit.....

HOLY CRAP!!!

It's a brand new bike! This thing freakin' SCREAMS! I only did a cool-air run around the 'block' - about five miles - but first and second gear wheelies, solo, with no bags, were but a twist of the wrist away. I was running without the outer airbox because I wanted to make sure the muffler motor was working (DAMN, does that intake honk without a cover!), and I was surprised at how *rarely* the valve opens. If I'd known that (and what a HUGE difference it makes), I'd have left the valve *shut* with the race ECM....

Gotta say - Erik and the Elves know what they're doing when it comes to exhaust systems and flow characteristics. I'm a born-again believer!

Love it.
I messed with 4 stroke dirtbikes for years, they always seemed to run better stock : )

This sounds like exactly what I would like out of my 09. Looks like all I'd need to do to an otherwise stock 09 is open up the airbox and add a K&N?

FWIW, I contacted EBR a couple weeks ago asking about low down power, switching mufflers, race ecm etc. The response I got was that the stock exhaust was "actually very good". Can't remember the rest of the email and can't find it but it was enough to convince me that a loud exhaust was not what I wanted.

Your 09 already has an open inner airbox - the 06 was the last year of the super-sealed inner box. All I did was get a holesaw and put a bunch of swiss-cheese holes in it, about the same area that was opened up on the later boxes.

If you REALLY want some intake honk, check these out:

I can only imagine how much sound those will transmit!

while i had the muffler off of the m2, i went ahead and took discs out of it and it sure is nicer to not have the loudness that it had before. now i have to do something with the blast and the ultra.

I had a stock header with Screamin' Eagle slip-ons on my old FLHP. Nice and mellow, nothing too loud or obnoxious, good performance (with high compression pistons, ported heads and .570" cam, that old 80" evo put out 90/90 hp/tq at the wheel!).

Go figure, a bunch of very well educated and experienced engineers put their heads together and figured out how to make a motorcycle run well.
Don't tell the aftermarket guys.

My 07 Uly I recently picked up is a monster compared to my 04 with the full race kit. Although the 04 sounds really cool and can still do wheelies fairly well the 07 Uly is a wolf in sheep's clothing for sure. I like the stock setup and when you get on it, it sounds really good. I'm not gonna mess with it at all!

It's hard to improve on sheeps clothing - wool is a wonderful natural fiber. I find the stock 103 HP sufficient for my needs. Seems Eric & co knew how to coax the best out of the old 72 cu in tractor engine. Pretty amazing when ya think about it. A 100 year old Vtwin design, pushrod, 2 valve engine with no throttle body syncing, no valve adjustments, that meets EPA standards and provides plenty of power. Damn wizzards they are! er... were.
