Do you think that its OK to put synthetic oil in at the first 1000 mile oil change or should you wait till the next one? I inquired at the local dealership and one tech said its OK at 500 miles and the other said its OK at 1000. What do you think and why?

Either/or. I have 4 Xbs, one tuber and one 1125. All of them were changed to synthetic at 1000 miles. All run great with almost no oil consumption. I change it at 2500 on the air motors and 3000 on the 1125. Just make sure whichever synthetic you use has the proper ratings.
Also leaves more dino to make gas.

I changed mine at 1000 and my engine kept using oil. After another 1000 miles I switched back until 5000 miles. Now it has synthetic and uses just a little between 5000 mile changes.

I think you will find people that have done it at different intervals with no definite pattern of failure that could be attributed to using Synthetic "too early."

I have mostly read to use it only after 3,000 miles, but I know some performance cars use synthetic from the factory.

I have never read a logical argument for why not to use it at 1,000 miles, most people say it is "too slippery" and that the rings won't seat well. Whereas I have read that the rings seat, for the most part, during the first 50 miles.

Choose whatever you feel comfortable with IMHO.

I run synthetic in all of my vehicles, For gas car/truck and street bike engines I put it in at the 3000 mile oil change. On my ATVs I've done a little sooner. I think I'll wait till 3000 miles on the buell.

The break-in of your engine has more to do with oil consumption and performance than when you change to synthetic.
That being said please check out this article:
