Coupla years ago I posted a thread titled "Anyone else like their Uly quiet?" to which many of you replied "hear, hear!" (no pun intended)

Nothing wrong with the sound of a well-tuned V-twin, y'unnerstand (my Aprilia & Ducati both have aftermarket silencers), but I feel an "ADV-style" bike like the Uly oughta "tread lightly," etc. Just MHO.

When I went to a NM Buell rally a couple years ago lotsa folks had loud pipes (no Uly riders, though); kind of a shock to me after being used to "quiet." I suppose Homecoming will have an assortment of blooey pipes...

If you have ever been to a BMW rally and someone comes in on a loud bike everyone looks around like a loud drunk has just busted thru the church house doors in the middle of the sermon

As far as sound goes, I have the stock pipe on mine, it works great and is nice and quiet in the mornings so I don't have issues with the sleeping wife.

However, I drilled some 5/8 inch holes in the air box. What a difference! when you throttle it, it makes a nice throaty roar and the mid range power is dramatically improved.

I can hear the roar over my ear buds, I'm digging it.

matachanu,
I take it you must have the older closed up box.
From what I gather my 2008 model has the airbox already opened up.

Took the ul;y out on saturday with my gf.

roade around upstate NY farm land and forests. Nice ride. Love the heated grips!

I like to ride at around 3k RPM, engine has a nice sound at the lower revs.

I took my helmet off and rode it yesterday for the first time. Stock muffler. It does sound really good when you get on it. I'm kind of liking the quiet actually. You can hear almost everything in the engine working. Fuel pump, injectors, valves. Mines an 07 and it is more noticeable than my old 04 with the air intake. Think I'm done with being loud and obnoxious. Signs of getting older I guess. Neighbors said last night they were used to me firing up my Yamaha Warrior and taking off and it would remind them they need to get out and ride. Both ride some nice Harleys. One of them a cross bones. I actually kind of like that one and stock it sounds pretty good.

I kinda like my Uly stock muffler sound too. (seems to be getting louder) But... there were quit a few times riding along where people didn't hear me and/or zoned out and/or forgot I was there and moved into my lane. If I had loudness, they would most definitely have heard me and not moved over. So far, I run maybe 20% on the trail, if that. Well, the other day I noticed my 06 muffler is very rusty with flakey rust in the rear. OH DAM!!! As I type this the UPS man just delivered a box. I suspect it is my Spec-Ops muffler.

do not count on loud exhaust to let a driver know you are riding in their blind spot.

Try this in your car or truck. As your driving down the highway with your windows up and radio on, watch your mirrors for a bike that is about to pass you. As a loud bike passes you, at what point is it loud enough to alert you it is there? It will be far enough up beside you that you will see it out the windows.

My best defensive is to not ride in blind spots. First I pause as I switch lanes so my HID lights up the rear view mirror, then I gas it and get up next to the driver and make sure they see you. Plus I try not to to pass on the Right side.

I hate loud bikes. I don't even go riding with guys on loud bikes.

Looks like an easy swap. But I am alittle worried that it will be too loud. Eh..fekit. I just won't rev it up before 9am or after 9pm (or so).

Oh I would never count on my loud pipe... but I've had quite a few close calls in traffic definitely because I WAS so quiet. I don't "ride in blind spots" But at one point, if you are moving even slightly faster (or slower) than they are (they: 50 you: 55-60) or (they: 72 and you: 78) you will be in his blind spot at one point. If there is no other traffic you can ride on by him... but if you are in heavy traffic... moving along at any mph... Folks will hear you more especially if you keep the revs fluctuating. Seems like a no-brainer to me. I will keep my Spec ops any day. OOPS!! I mean.... my soon to be installed Spec-Ops. Time will tell !!

I do not want my pipe to loud, it might drown out the sound of the fan. I like to tell folks that sound is the turbocharger fan cooling down.

Personally I like the Uly sound as is. Decent rumble w/o being obnoxious and nice roar when you get on it. My actuator malfunctioned w/ the valve opened. At first I dug the sound, but the mileage was off and low end power was down.....neither desirable traits to me. Had it fixed and all was right again.

Welcome to the insanity Matt and please post many pics of your Labrador trip!! One of my goals (bucket list stuff) is to head up through New England-New Brunswick-Labrador-Quebec-back home to NY. No specific plans, just have seen some trip scenes from those parts and looks interesting. BTW, where did you hit up in Northern NY?

Oh yeah, knew you were going to take some hits on that post. At least it wasn't too painful...........

I liked the sound of the stock exhaust but I couldn't take the rust so I replace it at the 10,000 mile service with the race can. It's not too loud except when I leave for work at 4:30am on Monday mornings. I push it to the entrance of my townhome complex before starting to try and keep my neighbors happy!

Hi all I have an 06 uly with 68,000 km's and I modded my stock muffler about 5,000 km's ago and have found it to perform no better or worse than stock. I just wanted it to sound like a 1200 twin should. For those who are interested, basically what I did was cut out the r/h pipe from the center chamber and then drill 3 x 1" holes in the middle pipe of the same chamber. The sound level would be about half way between stock and the aftermarket pipes. It does rev quicker. Still have the stock airbox & ECM. Love the extra rumble without it being offensive. Easy to put back to stock if you don't like it. Cheers & will somebody send me a 2010 X please

Took the cornwall bridge and then headed for Malone. Where my buddy got a ticket for driving out of some dinner driveway where we ate and into the gas station beside it (a whole 6ft). I on the otherhand got off scott free because i decided to ride through the 10ft stretch of mud between the two (basicaloly I drove on the lawn (tsk, tsk, tsk). But the cop said that thier was nothing wrong with that

anyhow we were planning to ride to the ferry and cross over onto the islands in lake champlain and ride back to Montreal but the 45mins!!! that it took the cop to give my buddy a ticket and with darkness coming and my wife getting cold on the back of the uly we decided to head back up via the 374. nice little road saw load of goose, and some partridge or grousse or whatever they were. Also, has 2 deer in the road near the border crossing just kind of standing around.
