Hey Don I wonder if there was someone under torqueing the the steering head for the 2009 models. I am not sure or maybe it was on some of the early ones and they corrected it later on during production. What number is yours. I have number 1 for 2009. Mine was also a 1/4 turn loose.

Mine was made in April 09, I think its 752.

Well maybe it is just a coincidence or it was a problem. Have not seen many complain about it and the dealer over looked something like this being a possibility that the steering head was loose so maybe it was not a problem on the early 09 models.

I have 2009 #71 and no clunk. But maybe yours were both assembled on Friday : )

All XB's and 1125s have the potential to "clunk". There is hundreds of threads about this going back years. I am pretty sure the service manual says to re-torque them after a certain mileage.

My dealer mentioned checking the head bearings as one of the things they do if you bring it in for their $450 service. Naturally I bought the service manual and do ALL the service myself.

Well after my experience with the last two dealers I have been to, I am doing the same thing Badrap. At least I know it is getting done right when I do it.

Well, re-torquing the head bearings did not fix my clunk (which I never really considered a clunk, but more of a pronounced tick or click).

I do think I found the cause and fix though. I noticed that the rubber grommet where the front brake line goes through the lower front fender was not in the fender but was a few inches above the fender. Silly me did not put that sucker in its right spot when i replaced the front tire. So before my ride this morning I corrected that problem and no more click.

Just something to consider if you have had you front wheel off recently and notice a funny noise that you think might be your head bearings.
