my new wife seemed to enjoy riding on the uly... we had a discussion a few days ago as to weather i should continue riding or buy a jeep. in 10 years of riding, ive logged more than half a million miles.. i averaged 50-60k miles per year and have done the dragon tail more than 50 times.. ive owned more than 14 bikes and several have been buells.. i have never been down, dropped a bike or been in a crash.. monday, on my way home from cedar key, i was traveling about 30 mph on my harley... a woman ran a stop sign and i hit her broadside.. we were both wearing full face helmets and leather.. i was able to crawl over to my wife, who was unconscious.. after a trip to the ER, we are mending at home... both of our helmets were gouged in the facial area and prevented serious mandible trama... yep, we were only 5 minutes from the house.. the woman has no insurance, as is par for the course.... | ||

Thank God your both mending. I've been through a few crashes and it always gives me pause as to whether I'll climb back on but as soon as I'm able I always do and am glad I did. I've always believed when it's your time it's your time. Look what Lawrence of Arabia went through only to die taking an innocent ride on his bike. After you heal up I believe you'll want to get back on. Heal well. | ||

Glad you were both geared up. Life is fragile, and short. Heal up, fix the bike, then try again. | ||

My Dad was hit by a Left Turn Larry when he was 62. The bike had about 5,000 miles on it. As soon as he healed up (subdural hematoma) he got his bike fixed and rode 80,000 more accident free miles. He gave up riding at 70 stating you know when its time to quit. Oh, the guy that hit him had no insurance. | ||

What happens when they have no insurance? They get to say "ah, too bad" or do they get locked up? Sure glad you lived to tell about it. Around here it's rare (but encouraging) to hear of hog riders wearing fullface let alone a half-dome helmet. I was just at a M/C safety class today and that, along with what you shared has convinced me to spend the bucks and get a high-performance Shoei helmet (they fit great besides) instead of the low-cost fullface I have now. Thank you for the motivation! | ||

Those who drive without insurance should get locked up! maybe some time behind bars will convince them to get some insurance! Glad you and your lady are all right. | ||

Ronmold My buddy was hit by an uninsured driver who was on welfare. He was un-injured but his bike was a total loss...the value was about $4200. the driver of the car was ticketed, my friend sued and won. He receives $7.26 per month via check cut by the state. They call this a "structured settlement".  | ||

Glad to hear you're OK & healing. The penalty in Montana for no insurance is a severe scolding, which, by the way, is the same penalty for a third DUI. No proof of insurance is required when you get plates/tabs - they just ask you if you have insurance. | ||

Werewulf, sorry to hear about your accident. The no insurance thing sucks. I got rear-ended on my KLR last May at a red light. Luckily, I walked away and the guy did have insurance. I too had on all the gear and just ended up sore for a week or so. I was a bit gun shy and didn't get on a bike for a couple of weeks. When I did ride I was hyper-aware. I felt like every car was out to get me. That soon passed. It was my first get-off on the pavement in 28 years of road riding. I wish you the best. ATGATT | ||

Werewulf, Glad to hear you are both up and about now. I lived in G'ville (worked in the NFRMC ER for several years) and my parents currently reside on Cedar Key, much to my mother's chagrin. My father rides that area regularly on his Electra Glide, ducking deer and locals often. Levy and Dixie county are about 1:1 on number of deer that with your name on 'em vs. number of uninsured motorists. Either one will find you in a heartbeat with painful results. Unfortunately, only one has a season that allows you to hunt them AND their offspring legally. Again, glad to see you typing this vs being "reported on" here. Godspeed on the recovery. | ||

Werewulf, soo sorry to here about your crash. But glad your injuries were not worse. Not sure if it still in effect, but I recall that there was a law that you could go to the local sheriffs office and fill out some papers/application to have the other drivers' license revoked until you have been compensated for your loss. This will insure this person does forget what they have done. Maybe even get you some cash for your bills, bike,ect. I have a great respect for people in your line of work and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service to the great state of Fl! Gods speed. | ||

That was a couple of years ago, he just returned from his second tour there though. Now he's off to Hawaii for 3 yrs. Prayers for your hero! | ||

Thanks Ron, he only 19, been in for over a year and loves it. Four months out of Infantry Basic (Basic/AIT) he left for the sandbox. It took the Mrs. a while to get used to it. He was one of those kids that knew he belonged in the Army at a young age. Once he gets home this fall, it's off to sniper school. Nice to hear yours is headed to Hawaii. | ||

I'm really sorry to learn of your mishap but I too am thankful that you are both ok with no serious injury. Many years ago I was in a similar situation but came out of it with a broken arm and wrist. Thankfully you two fared much better. Best wishes for a speedy return. Bob |
