Just did my first oil change on my new to me 08XT. I put Mobil 1 v-twin 20w-50 in both holes and a Wal-Mart oil filter. The oil that came out was almost black. So I plan to do another change in the spring, but this time try Mobil 1 Racing 15w-50 in the swingarm. It looks like it would be great for our engines. This is what there web site said about there 15w-50 oils are formulated with anti-wear (Zinc/Phosphorus) chemistries at twice the level of automotive street oils to protect race engines including high loaded flat tappet designs.
Has anyone used the 15w-50? just asking?

What was the mileage and was that the original factory oil? I'm asking because if it was the first change since break-in you'd expect it to be quite dirty.

You would be better off using toilet paper than a Fram filter. I laugh that they actually call it a filter!

+1 with Froggy.

I've got a Buell Black and a Supertech cut apart in the garage that one of these days I'll post pics of. The O-ring on the Buell filter is nicer but I've never had a problem with the WalMart Supertech. The Buell relief valve is a metal nice looking spring loaded device while the Supertech uses a plastic plug. Maybe a little overkill IMHO as often as I toss filters.

Everything else in those two filters is identical, and it appears they are both made by Champion. Frams are glued paper-ended POS's, also IMHO.

Ever seen the paper element come loose and pieces plug oil passages? It makes the rods turn a real pretty blue.
Last time I bought OEM filters they were $6.95. Sounded like a good deal to me.

FWIW, I'm using the Wix 51394. After reading several oil filter test results, Wix is still holding in there with the best.

For oil, I'm using Mobil 1 V TWIN 20W-50 in the motor and Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10w-40 in the primary/trany. This was at the recommendation from a Mobil tech (email).

Someday.....Bike has 8300 miles and was a repo so oil change history is unknown but is was dark and dirty. Thats why I will change it again soon. The 15w-50 Mobil 1 sounds good to me, but both holes?

I'm not going to tell you what oil to use, there really are no BAD oils anymore. I will say what not to use. 10/40 oils are the worst thing you can use since all the elements that make a 10 wt act like a 40 wt takes away from what could be more lubrication. This is from a lubrication training I had at work. Also using some gear oils in the primary will have some ill effects on the glue used on your stator. I know Amsoil does not recommend their gear oil for the primary/tranny for that reason. They do recommend their 20/50 engine oil in both holes so using engine oil in both holes is a logical choice.

I find that when people go to school for years to study something, they usually know more about their areas of expertise than Charlie at the bar after work. I like to change oil at half the recommended intervals, using what the manufacturer recommends. That's easy with a car or a Buell. My Buell gets Syn3 for the engine and Formula + in the transmission. It's easy to find and it works well. There might be a better oil out there, but I don't know enough Petro-chemistry to determine if there is.
Now, for my Internationally Acclaimed fried potatoes, I prefer Market Basket Canola Oil. However, for Italian Green beans in tomatoes, I find that there is no substitute for Filippo Berio Italian Olive Oil.

After more investigation as it turns out my choice of filter is not as bad as some of you have said. The Fram "tough guard" filter rates in the average-better range when compared to the so called "best" filters out there. When I selected the filter, I did not do so without some considerable education and knowledge of the subject.

It has been my experience that those who would so quickly criticize the actions of others, often do so in an attempt to elevate their own status among their peers.
However, this behavior only exposes their lack of wisdom and yearning for respect from others. Respect is reciprocal

Rant over, Jeff

Due to early reports of stator failure (Tootal refered to this), hypotheticaly resulting from oil used in the primary disolving some of the shielding I only use Formula+ in the primary. I do not know if this theory about oil in the primary has been verified or discounted but I will keep doing what I am doing.

Pso,

I don't think this was from using a particular oil. From the research I did, it was referring specifically to synthetic GEAR LUBE destroying the stator.
