On my birthday (September 8) I start growing a beard. On my half-birthday (March 8) I shave it off. No trimming, no anything. It is welcome insulation during the New Mexico winter.

I'm not really happy with these photos (don't tell Mrs. Greg---she took them) but it's nice not to have to shampoo my face in the morning:

I think the "clean-shaven" foto looks like an undertaker (no offense to any undertakers out there)...oh well, there's always next year.

Doc, I've tried to grow a beard several times and it always turns out to be red so I just shave it off and stay clean shaven. I always thought it would be nice for the winter but I don't think I could stand it in the hot summer months. Might interfer with my helmet strap.

So you won't be taking a razor with you to Namibia, I take it?

Unfortunately, things are conspiring to prevent me from going to Namibia during Fall 2010. However, if I do go, I will remain clean-shaven. Couldn't handle a beard in the heat.

Hey Doc - my beard got so gray/white it was damn near invisible. But did prevent face lacerations each morning. j
