Hey all,

I hooked up a new auto GPS unit I got for X-mas and it keeps going off while riding, low battery. So does the Power Outlet on the dash stay hot all the time the motor is on or not?

If I buy one of the Buell GPS units, is it any better than anything else or is it worse? Where does the Buell unit get it power from? Thanks..

The dash plug on 08+ models is hot only when the ECM says so. In order for it to turn on, you need to have the key on, kill switch on, and have sufficient voltage available. Once the bike is running for a few seconds, it should be hot. If you are playing around with it in your garage, throw the bike on a battery tender to prevent the ECM from turning it off.

The problem you are likely having is the plug is coming loose. Your best bet is to use a rubber band or zip tie to hold the plug into the dash outlet.

I have the Buell/HD Zumo 550. (like it a lot) It's wired to the dash accessory plug circuit under the flyscreen. Believe that's only hot when the key AND the run swith are on. Check the fuse if you're having power issues with that circuit. Don't necessarily have to get the Buell Zumo; I believe the plain Zumo 550 comes with the cycle mount. The only thing the plain Jane doesn't have is the preprogrammed HD dealer locations. (really worth the extra $?) And the price on the 550 seems to be dropping.

The other thing to check, especially on an automotive GPS, is that it's seated in the cradle properly. LOTS of vibrations on a Buell, they can pop loose enough to lose contact, but still stay attached to the bike.

Best bet is to get a "motorcycle wiring kit" from whatever manufacturer makes your GPS, and hardwire it to the circuit inside the flyscreen. That way you don't have to worry about a plug coming loose.

I just run mine out of the plug under the seat, and put it in the tank bag. The plug works anytime I have the bike running.

Not sure what kind of GPS you have. Some Garmin GPS's don't operate well with usb cables for power. They use a different charging voltage than standard usb mini cables provide. I have experienced that with my nuvi 750, but have no problems when using the cable that came with it.

I found a Buell Quest for less than $300 and was wondering if it was worth getting the kit because it comes with the bike plugs to wire it in and the mount and so on. I just don't know if the screen is big enough. I ordered a Garmin Nuvi 500 before I found the Buell unit. The 500 has a 3.5 wide screen where the Buell unit has a 2.2 wide screen. Both are small.

Is a plug and play power harness avalible for plug and play?

The unit is a 1490T. The wife got it for X-mas. I had a Nuvi 650 on the Strom but the battery went tits up and every time ya stop you have to re boot. That sucked. Got a 100% refund from Cosco for the 650.
The plug is the usb type that I was using for my cell phone. The cord that came with the unit has a big ass traffic update antenna in line and is just to damn big to stuff out of the way. The on off button can not be used with any gloves thick or thin. It also won't let you adjust the screen brightness or whatever while moving? That blows! Safety BS!

The Buell/Garmin Quest is ok but after two years my connections between the unit and cradle wore out and the unit wound turn off and on. Had to get a new cradle but the connection on the unit are wore down do to vibration. I have a Garmin 550 now and just hooked up the GXM30 antenna and now have XM radio with the best of Sirius!

Do a search here for garmin quest. It has been beaten to death. It is great if you can live with its crappy antenna, small screen, slow routing, lack of features, lack of map storage, and high price (anything more than free is a ripoff).

I added the External Antenna to my Quest and signal problems went away. Its the same size as a Satellite Radio car antenna. I have mine mounted in front of the silver radio under the windshield

I've got a Quest II that bounces back and forth from my Uly, to the S2, to a car cradle. The screen is small in a car, but works fine on a bike since the bars aren't that far away. The Q2 also has nationwide street-level maps, while the Quest is only regional due to memory/storage. Physically, though, they're identical.

Is it more Atari-like than the wife's Nuvi? Absolutely. Does it work just fine for me nonetheless? Yep.

So Two - how do you listen to the Sirius? Do you have an amp setup for headphones, or just hook right into the audio out? I have a Stratus 5 dock-n-play, I could add a dock to the Uly in no time...

RatB, don't know if you Stratus has enough audio out to drive a set of helmet speakers. I never liked ear buds.

Here is what I've found out.

The Speakers that I use are Chatterbox, do a search for Chatterbox helmet speakers. Motorcycle Superstore has them for under 20 bucks. You also need a male to male audio cord; they sell a nice coiled one for 9.99. I did buy all of my speakers from Riders Warehouse but they stopped selling them, don’t know why. These speakers work real well with no-amp and just an iPod can drive enough audio at speed.

The Best Satellite Radio to use for a Motorcycle is an old Starmate. It has an external volume control or a Stiletto 2 with a car dock will drive enough sound to make you deaf. With the Stiletto 100 or 2 you can adjust volume and/or hit pause at a stop light to talk to a fellow rider.

I have played with a few amps also. The best I’ve found is an Iasus mobile amp. It has a Volume Control
Machined from aluminum with precise control for volume settings, even with gloves on. Only draw back is the battery is internal and you must charge it every 20 hours.

World's smallest high fidelity amplifier for iPod and other portable media devices

I have tried these Iasus speakers, great sound, big base but you need an amp to drive them. The mini amp above works great with these speakers.
