Please Don't laugh : )

I have this hobby where we dress up like Cowboys, and go to gun matches called Cowboy Action Shooting.

If I could ride my Uly, my range to different matches would be greatly enhanced.

The problem is I need to carry 2 six guns (fit in side bags), a rifle and a 18" barrel double barrel shotgun (plus ammo and holsters, etc)

My problem is the Law don't like the idea of 2 scabbards on the bike to carry the rifle and shotgun.

I have been thinking of building a trailer to carry these 2 guns. My thought are to make a single beam trailer that has a (lockable) box mounted on top for the 2 long guns. My thoughts are to use a single rear wheel that is in line with the bikes rear wheel. as the bike leans, so will the trailer. I will use a motorcycle rim and tire for the trailer for the high speed bearings and tire.(maybe my stock back rim when I buy a 2010 rim). Weight might be 50 lbs at the most if I use 2" square tubing for the trailer frame.

I was looking at the Uly to figure out how to attach the trailer. The Uly has a hollow axle! Since I am designing this trailer to have one wheel, and it will lean with the bike. Why couldn't I build a hitch that was offset at the front to keep the trailer tire in line with the back tire, and offset far enough to clear the Uly back tire. Then on the front have a pin the correct OD that passed through the Uly axle, with some kind of clip on the one side of the pin to keep from coming out of the axle. This coupling could have a bearing on both sides so as the road caused the pin to need to rotate in the axle it would not bind on the axle. I would keep the length as short as I could because as you swing around a tight corner, the rear tire might skid much like the tires on my Dual axle 5th wheel do in a tight corner.

Am I crazy? (well my Wife already says I am), but does it sound unsafe?

OK. I'm over it now.

All your revolver, holsters, ammo etc. should fit in the bags along with your period clothing. Break down the long guns, wrap them up and bungie them on. Skip the trailer.

Or

Wear your cowboy outfit, side arms and rifle slung across your back. Break down the shotgun and stow it in a side bag. Again, skip the trailer.

Post pics please.

See this thread.

Personally I would rig up some kind of gun rack that mounts to the topcase rack.

I have to agree with Panhead_Dan. The manual for my '09 Uly says "Never tow a trailer."
Of course, that may be a lawyer-driven statement more than an engineer-driven one, but why take chances?

They do that up in Deadwood here in SD. They go out in the street and do re-enactments. It's pretty cool and very entertaining!

I seen some motorcycle trailers on the advrider web site. They had one wheel and were meant for off-road use. Can't remember exactly what they were called though.

Towpro, if you do decide to build the trailer, I'm not sure I would use the stock '07 rim on it. The bearings might fail.
I'm also not so sure the cops would mess with you if they saw two gun scabbards attached to your bike?

Also, I assume you are going to change into the cowboy duds after you get there, right? Remember, when you ride your Uly, you are representing all of us!

I'm trying not to laugh. Really, I am. But seriously?

If only you would have just said you need a trailer to haul your guns and ammunition around... then we'd all just be thinking to ourselves, "Man! What a badass, cool MF!" But you surrendered just a little too much information. Of course a lot of people still dress like that here in Texas - guns and all - and not necessarily for a special occasion. So what do I know?

Should you build your trailer, you should design it to look like a covered wagon.

I tried using an old golf bag for my rifles but it was too short.
Perhaps some other type of sling bag would fit the bill?

I've actually been looking at this option for a couple of years even though I just got my Uly last year (I like to plan a little ahead).

Here's a few links:

If you need a place to stay:
http://www.motorcycletrailerstore.com/index.php?ma in_page=product_info&cPath=91&products_id=189

Some strange ideas (and executions) on uni-wheeled trailers: http://www.singlewheel.com/

A grand execution on a Ducati: http://www.ducati.ms/forums/attachment.php?attachm entid=24154&d=1197310874

I had another link to a useful single-wheel trailer with a little more off-road 'attitude' but I've lost that link.

(and the unit in the picture above appears to be of the trailer that was at the link I couldn't find)

Thanks guys, got to read that later tonight. that picture sure looks like it goes through the axle to me.

I was thinking on the train ride home, why even bother with an offset in the hitch. Why not just bring a member straight back, on one side of the wheels, then mount my box offset on the frame so it is centered on the line of the tires. And maybe a coffin shape would fit for my application : )

Buewulf, I also shoot a lot of silhouette (some out to 500 yards), so I don't always wear a costume.

And what's the matter of wearing my cowboy getup on my Uly. HD riders are allowed to dress up like pirates : )

We learn more and more about each other every day! Heck, I sometimes wear my family's tartan kilt to my local Scottish pub (only on Burns Night).

A last thought here...and I am in Tombstone AZ tonight so I speak with cowboy authority. "I'm gonna skin this iron and burn you down!" Hahahaha...

No really...a high-end bicycle trailer (two wheel) has a tongue that would attach at a single point high on the Uly...and should be able to take some speed. Just a thought...or at least that design.

If the trailer idea flops, check out Kolpin Scabbards, They are hard plastic and will mount to any tubes. Elk hunters that use ATVs mount them on their rigs. You should be able to mount the scabbard sideways and cover it with a wet bag. Or camo it some way. As for those cowboy shoots, they have them here in Colorado. Looks like fun.

They make a single wheel trailer for bicycles you could look at for ideas. It looks a lot like the one on the firebolt.

I am going to get an "Aspen" that I am going to hitch to my Uly (with a swivel joint) and drag around untill I'm old enough for a Victory Vision as my tow vehicle.

I'm going to build a small dog house on top of the trailer so I can bring my insignificant other and our (her) three mutts.

If the idea of trailering is only so you can haul two long guns I would definately go with the rack idea Froggy suggested. I know that people have built bike racks on their motorbikes so a gun rack is certainly possible.

On a side note...if you point those six shooters down at your sides and empty them will you really fly up in the air like Yosemite Sam ?

I pull a Uni-go trailer behind my Road Glide. It's not quite big enough for what you want it for but the design of the draw bar and hitch might be of interest. They use a U-joint arrangement that allows the trailer to move left and right, up and down but not fall over. Here is a link to their website:

Here is a picture of the hitch on a Harley:

As far as cowboy shooting, I think it's a great hobby, I mean, chaps is chaps right??

Well Mike, I've never seen those before, looks like Towpro could mount a double wide gun case and his ammo bag to that for sure. When I first saw the picture I thought somebody had strapped a two wheeler cart to the back of the bike! Actually, if you had two narrow tires on the back instead of one fat one it would be easier to move around off the bike.

www.thirdwheeltrailers.com I was and am thinking of this unit for my Uly. They say it fits perfect and there is even a shot of a uly with one on. Very simple, have talked with them a couple times on the phone. Real nice guys, and passionate about their product is sure.
A pretty trick little unit, might be abit short for what you want, but take a look.

Hey Mike, How would you guess, if you could, think the eaglemate would attach to the Ully? In the picture you posted, it almost looks like it may attach to the plate mount, but hard to tell. Not sure that would be sucure. Thanks

Druelly, in the above pic, on the front, there is a plate with holes on it... swings up (to be horizontal) and slides into a mounted slot, also with a hole...where the pin drops thru and u lock it with a lockpin. Looks like a 4x10 metal slot mounted to that existing bike. Not sure how that would work with the Uly. I guess the mount slot would have to be bike specific.
