...one should always check to see that the cam engaged the lock plate when the key turned.

Why yes, that is a good idea. Otherwise it could bounce off from there with ten pounds of stuff in it, and if one is having a good day it will land in deep grass and only suffer from the reflector lens breaking loose from its two screw mounts.

I'm just sayin'.....it could happen.

Same thing applies to the sidecases.

They handle funny when you have only one bag on. And the bag bouncing down the roadway makes one *funky* noise : )

The trick I've learned is - turn the key to lock it, then try - without turning the key - to flip the latch open again. If you're done right, it won't open. If you aren't done right, it opens and you can fix it.

Fortunately, I have decades of BMW riding experience.

As soon as I heard "the sound", I immediately recognized it as a Hepco & Becker product tumbling along at 70 mph. I only had to trot a few hundred feet back to retrieve the little jewel. I could use a new reflector, anyone have the part number?

I don't have any part #s but I do Know it costs $28. That cam and key lock can bite you in the ass if your not careful. The strangest part is, after 10miles of riding it did'nt fall off... It waited until I was stopped at a light in traffic for all to see, than vibrated off with a loud crash!

I used bungee/straps just in case I screwed up locking the bags.

JUST IN CASE

Straps +1. If for no other reason than a lid latch can self destruct at any time...dumping the contents of your case down the highway without any telltale sound or funky noise.

I think that is what happened to mine on my first month. After I got home some thing did not look proper when I pulled into the garage. My top case along with my glasses and my wallet. Retraced my steps 60 miles several times and never found it. So please do recheck your locks.
