Hello, I recently picked up some 20MM Ammo Cans that I thought I could mount to my 08 Ulysses. They are 8" wide, 19" long and 14.5" tall.

Where or who makes the best side racks to do this? I've looked at the Happy Trail racks, they look like they'd do the job. It appears that Caribou no longer makes the racks for the Uly and I'm not sure they would work, but I do like their appearance better than the Happy Trail racks with out the panniers mounted.

I'm just curious to see if anyone else makes racks that I could take a look at, or if I had other options. I don't know if I can even get the Buell racks anymore or if they'd work.

Sorry for the long message and multiple questions. But I figure someone here has done it before.

Touratech may still have some available. They claim they are strong enough to be rear crash bars.

TT's are all that, but about 2x the price of HT.

Not sure if you looked at the Twisted Throttle racks. I just got a set myself to hook up some custom made bags. They're very high quality racks and include brackets for relocating your rear turn signals.

I had Happy Trails on my '07 Uly until this summer.

The side racks took a lot of work to get them to fit. I drilled out the mounting holes for more clearance and reformed the racks until they fit.

Also, the racks did not extend the same distance from the bike on the left and right side.

One piece of advice or comment. Ammo cans are very strong with hard corners. Design your mounting system to break free from the bike in a crash. If the ammo can stops suddenly one or more of four things can happen: the can deforms, the can mount breaks, the rack deforms or the bike's tail section breaks. You do not want the tail section to break.

I have become a strong fan of soft bags or plastic bags with round corners.

I ordered the Twisted Throttle rack for my 07 Uly on Sunday 2/28 it wont be in till 3/29 : ( That is the same thing I am doing. I got some ammo cans from work. then maybe use spray in bed liner type material on the inside or just get liners. I went to the machine shop to see if they could make me some mounts that go in between the cans and the mount that will break easily in case of a crash or they get caught on anything at speed.
