HI, I just found out about the Buell Ulysses, I know, live under a rock! But I'm old and maybe even senile, anyway, are there crash bars for the Ulysses? I have dropped every bike I have ever owned and when I buy the 12X it will only be a matter of time, so do I just buy a box of spare hand guards and brake/clutch levers, or is there something available to protect it in a drop? | ||

No good crash bars available. Buy front and rear axle sliders from http://darkhorsemoto.com/ Then remove the spacer in the front turn signals, that'll save those in a tip-over. And buy Bark Busters metal hand guards to save your levers. You could also just buy shorty levers from American Sport Bike. | ||

Thanks, I like the slider idea, and the better guards. what about highway pegs, or some such? | ||

Anyone added the slider protection that fits over the timing cover? I don't recall where I've seen it but thought it novel at the very least. | ||

I have a pair of extra-heavy bar-end weights from HVMP.com that held up extremely well in a 50mph crash. Unfortunately, the handlebars were bent beyond saving, so I popped the old weights back into the new handlebars. In a slower tipover, bar ends will definitely help. (Some people say they reduce the vibes in the grips, too.  ) Oh, and the bags definitely help protect the back end bits. The rear axle sliders might never see the pavement if you leave the bags on (here's hoping nothing but the tires see the pavement!). (Message edited by hooper on February 16, 2010) | ||

On protecting your Uly from the eventual fall/slide. I just had the opportunity to slide mine on asphalt at about 30 mph. A curb was also involved too but no other vehicles or stationary objects. Here's what happened to the bike: Plastic scratched on left side only: windshield, front fly screen, oil cooler, front shock gaiter, rear Hepco hard bag. Everything survived in tact except the lens popped off the front turn signal, the left mirror is gone, the clutch lever broke but could still work, the bars are very slightly bent back. All told, about $200.00 in parts and I need to live with scratched plastics. I had bark busters vps installed as well as lowered "billet pegs" from precision engineering. Both of these accessories are still there and took the brunt of the fall & slide. I installed these items for a 3 week offroad ride this past Summer. They protected the bike in several small tips and slides on that trip as well. I would recommend these two simple items as mandatory on every Uly. The Ulysses is a tall bike, eventually you will put your foot down and have no good surface to grip. THE BIKE WILL FALL. The stock pegs are ok and survive well too, but the billet are even bigger/better. With out the rear hard cases on, the driver pegs take alot of the brunt. I cannot believe the hard bags did not break off /detach at all. The left bag has a repairable crack on one half of the case. It's heavily scratched but that's it. Its actually still useable. The Uly is a very very strong bike and can take a tumble on the hard without major damage. All the replacement parts I could want are available and are very reasonable. be safe |
