I have an 09 Uly with the outdoorsman luggage including the top case. When riding with a passenger, you have to have the beaver tail in the upright position, this interferes with opening the top case. Having the top case rack on the back negates the purpose of the triple tail, but I want to keep the side handles because that is what the top case mounts to. Anyone make a solution for this?

Would be ugly to just remove the beaver tail without putting something in its place. Put a piece of pipe in between handles?

Curious what your thoughts are.

I use the TT in the down position to fasten gear with when going on a solo trip

I pulled the spring out of the Triple Tail so I don't need to poke the key into it to release it.

Works great, and I still have it in case the wife decides to go for a ride.

Since I don't ride 2-up and I kept getting my foot hung-up on the grab rails when getting on and off, I took everything off! That stuff weighed almost 8 lbs! You can't imagine how heavy that "beaver tail" alone weighs. I wonder how that fits in with "mass centralization"?

was it easy to get to the spring mark. that's not a bad idea. once you lock it into place, where does it have to go.

Spring's easy to get. Actually, not removing the spring itself, but the 'wobble latch' (you'll see when you're in it). Take off the left grab rail, it's in that end. Just take out the part that the key pushes on, IIRC.

Ratbuell, that is correct. I just did mine a couple days ago. I removed the black plastic 'wobble latch' and also the steel pin. I then cut out a small flat plastic piece and inserted it for the spring to seat on. I did not like being able to look into the key slot and see the spring. Also, the plastic piece will help keep dirt and moisture out.
It is so much easier now to move the T-tail out of the way when I want to fully open the top box. I assume the key release was just a safety item in case you forget to flip the plastic lock tab into position? When the top rack and box are on the bike, the T-tail cannot flip backwards anyway so no one will fall off the back.

I want to say that all I did on mine was turn the wobble latch around? Or I cut the pointy end off it...something. But it (or part of it) is still in there for the spring to seat against. Then I filled the key latch with RTV silicone (sexy, I know) and painted it with titanium wheel touchup paint ; )

DEFINITELY makes it easier to get in the top case...especially since I run a HB 50L with luggage rack now!

I thought about cutting the wobble latch down but decided against it in case I want to return to the stock setup. ( I doubt that will ever happen. ) I even used a piece if red plastic that matches my plastics just so it would look good if anyone looks into the key slot! Sometimes my obsessive compulsive disorder drives me crazy.

Check with SOMEDAY. He removed his and all the excess (to his needs) hardware. Took a ton of weight off that way and it's kind of nice looking.

DriSlide the teeth, it helps keep it from 'freezing' in place.

And I like the look of the clean tail...but the handles are just too damned handy for bungeeing things to (like a saddlebag lid if you break a latch)!

Looks good. I can see that with a Palmer rack and no T-tail.

That is exactly what I was looking for Joesbuell. Do that handles seem less solid without the triple tail in there. I will still have the topcase rack mounted to the handles so they will be tied together.

What is the outside diameter of the pipe you put in there? Is the piece solid or loose. How did you mount it? Sorry 20 questions.

Triple tail is a cool item if you dont have a outdoorsman top case rack. If you do it is annoying as hell.

Thanks,

So the palmer tail works with USA plates? That looks good. I like how it doesnt have all that junk hanging off the back. I thought the palmer tail only worked with UK/Euro plates.

Thanks Neil, I still have the bags I just refit them when needed. The Mrs doesn't like to use the back rest so thats the main reason for it's removal. Chris the handles are just as solid as before. I too have been using the top case with this setup with no ill effects. It's better because you don't have to worry about the top case lid hitting the triple tail when in the up position.
Not sure of the diameter mate, but it is a very snug fit, doesn't rattle or move and is held in place by the two handles.

hope that helps

Cheers
Jodie

My wife does not like the triple tail as a backrest either. It is too floppy and hurt her back when she tries to lean on it. Thanks for the info
