Hello All I am new here. I live in British Columbia and just purchased a 08 X. It is still at the dealer in Montana and i won't be picking it up till April. My previous bike was a 06 Wee Strom which i put 80,000 kilometres on (around 45,000 miles or there about). I love long rides and am wondering if there are any mechanical modes or preps that I should consider for the Uly to prepare for the long days of travel? Thanks for your help.} | ||

I flew 1500 miles and rode home a new Uly awhile back. Nothing needed to be done to the bike. Depending on your breakin procedure, you could schedule first service along the way, or, you could take the bike on some side roads around the dealership, thrash the hell out of it motoman style, change oil and be on your way. Good luck, there is no better way to buy a new bike than fly/ride! | ||

You might want to look into another windshield. It was the first farkle I did one I got my XT last spring. The buffeting and noise from the XT screen was horrible for me. Others aren't bothered by it, so it could be just me. I got the Madstad screen and adjustable mount (http://www.madstad.com/). After playing around and adjusting it to my liking, I haven't had to adjust it since. It's pretty well perfect for me as far as reducing buffeting and noise while in the saddle. Other than that and a couple of saddlebags, I'd say you're probably good to go! | ||

Until I got my windshield sorted out I couldn't stand riding over 50mph. That was back in 06' sometime. Stock wind screen on the 06 was less than worthless. | ||

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will check out the Madstad info. I am not sure the route, because my youngest daughter is riding along with me and will be navigating to some extent. I have Happy Trails racks and panniers, so will use those. They are old (like me), and are very durable (unlike me  ) I also have (aerostich) tank panniers, but I am not sure they will fit. We'll see. What are your guys thoughts on engine/tranny oil? Does Uly seem to function better on one type? | ||

If you're planning on riding back on Highway 3, plan your fuel stops conservatively or bring a couple liter bottles of fuel with you as insurance. There are a few stretches where gas stations are scarce. Beautiful road, though, and very little traffic even in the summertime. | ||

Congratulations Mojo. The Uly is just fine like it is (for me) . Ride it for 10,000 miles before you make any major changes. You might find you like it in stock form as well. As for motor oil and trans oil, I use what the manufacturer recommends. | ||

Some folks say that a steady RPM during the first 500 miles or so (i.e., steady freeway cruising) is not a good idea. I did a lot of accel and decel (keeping the revs per the manual) during my break in period. Just a thought. . | ||

Spandex shorts for you. Keeps the monkey butt to a minimum. Works better than a sheepskin. | ||

At 10,000 miles I switched to Mobile I V Twin 20w50 for engine and Racing T4 10w40 tranny. Couldn't be happier with the results. Dennis | ||

Welcome. If you're getting it from Beartooth in Billings, look me up. I'd be happy to guide you through a 500 mile break in ride. I have a stock XT shield with a Laminar Lip and that works out great for me. +1 on the sheepskin and get the short-haired version. The seat by itself is comfortable beyond belief for a stock seat. | ||

Don't be afraid of Saskatchewan highways. The Uly really soaks up the potholes. Once your bike has a few miles I would start carrying a spare drive belt. They're pricey but relatively easy to change. I had to wait 2 days for one to be bussed out of Calgary last summer. I got 26000km out of my first which I think is pretty good but it sucks to be stranded. | ||

I did a 2 up run all the way across Canada in 07 and didn't need to carry extra fuel at any point. That may be a consideration if you are planning on riding at night which I don't recommend. But have a great ride. | ||

I envy you, that would be a heck of a first ride! The roads of Ontario are all I have seen and if the Kings highway around Lake Superior is any indication, they were in great shape! Map out the fuel stops and be sure to change the revs during break in. My first 500 miles were done on back roads that required plenty of acceleration!! WOO WOO! |
