I've read alot on the LL. It's popular on the low screen. I want to hear from those who have it on the XT screen.

I have the XT screen, want to know how well it works, and if it causes too much flex. Also would like to hear from those with the Vario on the XT screen. How well do they work in the rain?

I don't have the money to get the LL, and palmer type brackets, but would like some better protection, any ideas?

FYI: I'm 5'10", with 30" inseam.

Thanks!

Gabe

Whisperstealth, you pose a difficult question, but I sure understand your asking it. I've definitely been there.

First, a little info: I'm 6'1.5" with a 33"/34" inseam. I have a 3 month old 2008 XT and I've put on the Laminar Lip, Rox Risers, the tall seat, and just recently Memphis Shades Lowers (wind deflectors) and as we know EVERYTHING effects wind in some way, large or small.

I like the Laminar Lip and it definitely keeps the wind off my chest. I was getting some head bobbing effects though so I installed the Memphis Lowers. I believe all problems are now solved but only more miles in the seat will confirm that. I only have 1700 miles on the bike and 170 miles with the latest configuration. I think I might have been fine without the lowers, though I think they help, so I'd suggest you go with the Lip first.

I really like the Laminar Lip because the support is great (Leo always answers the phone and is very helpful), the product is well made, and it can be placed in numerous positions. Buy the 20 extra fasteners for $6. The extra fasteners will give you more options if the first couple positions aren't what you want. Also, ask Laminar to give you the rubber bumper that goes at the top of your windscreen to support the longer windshield when the Lip is attached. Follow their instructions, clean all surfaces 'well' with alcohol before installing and I think you will be pleased. Another thing I like about the Lip is that you have the easy option of removing it in the hot months if you so choose. Laminar will also give you screws if you want to attach it permanently after finding the perfect height/placement for the Lip. I hope this helps a little. Best of luck. Mike

Thanks a bunch mike!

I'm in the spot of having to pick and choose carefully right now.

Like, get the buell tool kit, a tool tube, and mount it, or go for comfort and build my own kit from the tools I already have...

Please take my thoughts as simply one guy's experience. I've read where at least one other member feels the short screen is best with the Lip. Some riders want a riot shield in front of them and some don't want anything so wind effects, comfort, etc., are all individual preferences. I had to move the Lip several times but I like it. I sure hope whatever you get that you like it. Best of luck.

I'm 5'9" and have the stock XT shield with a Laminar Lip set so that the top is about 2" above the shield. Works great for me - a little wind noise, but no buffeting. Does its job. No problems in high winds or at 90 mph.

I like the LL also, tall ZG screen with LL about flush at the top of the ZG screen.

Mine is about at that same point, Itileman, and it seems to be very stable. Did you attach yours permanently with screws? I'm thinking of just staying with the velcro like fasteners. Maybe if I'm still pleased with the position it's in a year or so I'll consider screwing it on.

It took me years, several windshields, and too much money to finally get a windshield on my Dyna that I was happy with. I am just starting the experience with my XT. I have the stock windscreen, and I got the smoke X windscreen for Christmas. That is what is on the bike now. I am thinking about ordering the Laminar Lip and playing with it on the XT screen to get something with more protection for long rides and leaving the short X screen on for the rest of the time. I am also thinking about the Palmer brackets. Decisions, decisions. I agree totally with Buellerxt, what one person likes, another may hate. As a result, you just have to spend the money and hope for the best. Best of luck to you.

I too have tweaked windshields a lot and have always cut them down. On my FXDL, I chopped that to about 17". The first mod to my Road King was to cut the shield to 17" and I had another one for it cut to 11" for riding around town. The LL on the XT is set about perfect for me - got it right on the second try by lowering it to the current level. Going to keep the velcro mounts as they seem to work fine and I have some extras if I decide to move it. Which could happen as I'm not getting any taller, and I may need to lower it because at my age of almost 65, you tend to start going the other way.

Whisperstealth, I too am 5'10 with a 30" inseam and run the LL on my XT shield. I have had it on there since July when I rode from Tulsa to NC. I found that there was still a lot of turbulence until I added the Memphis Shades lowers. Now with both, there is no more turbulence but it is still noisy, but that is at sustained highway speeds. Since I ride with a full face helmet and ear plugs it is a non issue.

While on our trip, the Lip started flipping back towards me. Upon inspection, I noticed the dual locks had lost their stickiness (probably due to poor prep on my part). The only thing I had with me to fix it was super glue. I glued them in place and it has been on there ever since. No regrets.
