New to board and looking for some input on what I can do to wring a little more out of my Uly. Sold my 06 KTM 950SM and moved into the Uly, first thing I noticed... its pretty much a dog. HELP! I would wait on Eric Buell Racing offerings in the tuner realm. IIRC some one said he would like to offer XB ECMs tuned for drummers. You could use _______ Tuner Software to tune your 09. Some of the best pipes: Micron and Buell Pro Series are only available used. Drummers seem to be a favorite around here. With the tuning you could run a open air box, but I don't think thats going to make a huge difference. I made my on open kit from existing parts and $1.50 of Lowes hardware. What EG means is that the the 06/07 are less refined than the newer bikes, so because they are a little rougher running and have a more jerky throttle, they feel faster, despite having a lower top speed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The XB Motor is definitely on the slow side, in my opinion, and the issue is amplified by my subjective observation that it also feels slower than it actually is. Just not used to the power delivery and short powerband I guess. I actually hated the motor at first, but I got "acquainted" with it and learned how it liked to be ridden. Now, I like it a lot. There is a pretty good review of various exhaust systems for the XB here: http://americansportbike.com/. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believed the fuel map can be reprogrammed for the 2008+ bikes with Direct Link. Also google this site for a thread on the "open airbox" mod for the intake. You will find plenty of opinions on this site. If you are looking for 950SM power-to-weight ratio, however, it's probably going to take a little more than exhaust and remap. I value quiet operation and better filtration over the marginal(?) power increases from exhaust/intake mods. Just ECMSpy to refine the fuel maps is all I care to do. I've got an 06 with race can and ECM, open airbox, etc., but still am pushing for a bit more and going for the XB9 primary conversion this Spring. I'm not sure if you're looking for more low-end torque and control or just more speed, but the former sounds like a great addition to this bike from folks who have tried it. Not that it matters for me, but apparently it does not void warranty either. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I'm with Methed, XB9 primary made a huge difference in riding pleasure in the city and off road. It still pulls 120 on top so the question is what's fast enough for you. I just love torque wheelies!  | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Tootal...I got one but have not put it on until I spend a couple months here in AZ making sure I don't want the top end. Where do you find highway cruising rpm's and speed at? Is 85 a reasonable rpm? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I can't give you 85 but 70 was 3400 and now it's 3800. 4000 is 75 now. My bike is smoother at 3800 than 3400 so cruising at 70 is nicer now. The fun part is when your on the interstate and need to get around some cager with a cell phone a quick twist and your around him so much faster than before. Your just closer to being, "on the cam" that there is no waiting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Thanks Tootal. Probably like losing a gear I would think. I appreciate your feedback...just ran down to Quartzsite from Parker AZ in the sun today...gusts to 100 mph passing motor homes. But 75 seemed a nice comfortable speed. You think 4000 rmp too high to cruise long distances? I know it feels nice too. Lot smoother. Froggy...you are showing off! OK, maybe I need a CR. Wonder what it would take to Ulycize it. Nice two up seat, back bars...cruiser style. Nevermind...better stick with old paint. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

It wouldn't take much, but the 1125R would be better with its decent wind protection and taller gearing.  Everything with the powerband is about 1k rpm higher than the XB12. Power starts to really kick in at 5k instead of 4k, cruising at 4k on the 1125 is like 3k on the XB12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I usually run 5 over the limit when interstating it so around here the limit is 65 but when I'm heading down to Buelltoberfest I get to Kentucky and get to run 75 and it's smooth as silk there. Can't hurt anything there, the engines are near bulletproof up to 6000 rpm. This ain't your father's sportster! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Good to know Tootal. I don't like the tall low gear around town. Slipping clutch too much for my taste. Gotta cost me some day. Would be a lot nicer with a lower first gear and if 75 is nice and smooth and you can do it all day with decent economy (4000 rpm all day) then I am really leaning toward the XB9 set. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

My mileage around here, 700'above sea level, is 48mpg at 70. From Dalton Georgia to Nashville at 75, and higher elevation, I got 51 mpg. That's with all bags plus two soft bags on the back seat. |
