Time for an oil change - no rain, no snow - not quite sunny but 42*F. So I jumps on the 'ol Uly and go for a "spirited" 20 mi 1/2 hour ride. Pull into garage and shut down - no fan running - pull dipstick and oil is barely warm. Off I go for another 20 mins - same result. I think winter oil changes will require blocking the oil cooler & both air scoops to get it to operating temp. The 'KIT' is doing it's job for sure...too well in this case. I was forced to ride almost an hour - now I have sore grin muscles from the ordeal. Where do we send complaints...??

I might be wrong here, but I believe the reason to run a motor before changing the oil is not necessarily to warm up the oil, but to make sure any contaminants inside the motor are suspended in the oil. Thus when you pull the cork, everything comes out.

...and warm oil is less viscous than cold oil and will drain more completely.

Plugging the oil cooler with a rag is SOP for me in the winter regardless of having the kit.

Since I am draining the oil, do I really care how thick the is? If this is true, why don't we heat up the new bottles of oil to make sure I get it all into the engine?

And why worry about evaporating out any moisture? I am removing the oil, and everything mixed with it, so why bother?

I just run it long enough so any dirt particles that have settled out get suspended back on the oil so it comes out during the drain.

Don't get me wrong, I do let it warm up some, but why get it hot enough the oil burns your fingers?

If you have dirt particles or other contaminates suspended in your oil you are in trouble my friend. Any particles worth worrying about should be suspended in the oil filter element not in the oil it's self. Any condensation from the last ride will be absorbed and dispersed in the oil when you warm it up prior to changing it. You will however have some condensate the next time you ride so it's not a big point.

Oil detergents are made to suspend particles within the oil so the filter can remove them.
But the filter is at best rated at 10 micron, probably more like 40 on each pass. so yes, these particles smaller then the filter can remove are still floating around in the engine. When sitting, these particles dissipate and settle to the bottom of the engine. Start the engine up and run it, they mix back into suspension in the oil, pull the drain plug and they come out.

We often leave oil sit after removing and it takes months to show any noticable sediment. But hey this is what we are all saying the engine oil should be at least warmed up so it flows easier also. A hot oil change is always better than a cold one. You will not get the Uly oil to be so hot as to burn you when removing the plug. 1) the oil doesn't get hot enough to burn and 2) you don't need to pour oil on you to remove the oil plug.

Too late - Buell was killed by HD because all the reports of grinning was counter to the Sneering and Scowling and Tough-Guy Glaring they wanted to promote.

Bizarre that the Pac NW is one of the warmest places in the frozen USA. Some UN "Global Warming Expert" said on Fox today we are going into a 30 year mini ice age. This whole thing is loonie!
