Hi all, Happy New Year! I have a question regarding just getting the heat shield from the comfort kit. I already have the RSS and the little frame covers/deflectors. The seat heat has never bothered me, just would like to redirect the header heat a little with the shield. Tried ordering it online at Chicago Harley and it does not recognize the part number S0175.5AK, but does accept the hose clamps for the shield. Any sugestions?

Chicago Harley's website is horrible for stuff like this, your best bet is to contact one of the Badweb sponsors like Precision Harley or Liberty Harley, and they can get you the part or figure out what is up with it.

It comes up as an active part, no backorder showing. Nobody in the US shows it in stock, so it's gonna be special-order wherever you go.

The top heat shield off an 03 Road King works great. Otherwise, however much they cost, I'll sell you the stock Buell kit one for that price shipped.

Speaking of that heat shield... does it actually do anything? I installed the entire comfort kit back in August, and it worked wonders, but I've wondered if that shield actually helps anything - I have my doubts.

My thinking is that it just gets hot from the exhaust, then dishes the heat out just as the exhaust would have. I understand that there's a bit of air that gets in between the shield and the exhaust pipe, but I wonder if it really does that much.

Personally, I think it looks a bit like crap, and I kind of like the look of the bluish exhaust pipe. I've been thinking that in the spring, I'll take it off and see if there's a difference...

I will warn (and this seems obvious once you install) that when you add the heatshield, on my '07 anyway, make sure that the hose clamp screw bosses aren't in contact with the engine case or the cylinders after you tighten them. Again, this is obvious but a simple miss if you decide to do the install between 1am and 4am because of insomnia.

I caught my mistake the following day before I rode off. I discovered that after I tightened the clamps, their position had creeped and the contact on the back side wasn't that obvious when viewed on the front side.

I tested the heat shield theory last year when I got my XT, and before the advent of the Rider Comfort Kit (Buell stole my idea without just compensation). It seems to help, and, at least to me, it cuts down on some of the heat coming off the pipe.

Yes because the comfort kit wasn't in development before you bought an XT ; )

I think the chrome also reflects the heat better than the black.
I would have settled for a new XP for the idea.
