I'm quite ok with the periodic BBQ paint on my muffler, but thanks to a buddy I managed to acquire a race-pipe. This is the one with the silver paint finish and was wondering if the Jet-hot treatment would help keep the rust away....

so those of you wise gentlemen who've tried it....waddya think?
Thanks
Ken

if I had it to do over again, I would jet coat the stock muffler. I have the stainless steel race can which is ok.

Hi Ken!

I had the silver coated Buell Race Pipe on my City-X. It is a much different coating than that on the stock black pipe. I'm not sure what it is, but mine still looked new a year later.

If it is not nasty now, just run it. It is a good coating.

I had my stock muff ceramic coated locally for $100 - they ceramic coated it in flat silver
then powder coated it in black, as well, to match the stock can.

There really isn't anything special, per se, about the Jet-hot treatment... it's just
one company's trade-name for the same damn thing.

I'm trying a different approach guys, which may be no better than whistling in the wind, but we'll see in time. I covered the muffler with S100 Corrosion inhibitor and have re-applied it a couple of times in the first 1300 miles. I'll probably do it every now and then and see how it goes. As I said, time will tell. I'll report back in the summer, or earlier if I see rust.

thanks for the advice guys! You got a good point there Vern, the pipe was sitting in a shed (!) and is basically new. I guess, the smart thing would be to run it and worry about it next winter! sometimes I have problems with shoelaces too...

I had my already rusty muffler ceramic coated and the rust returned,(not as bad though). I attribute that to either insufficient prep work or oxidation having gone too far prior. I think you'd get a better result with a virgin can. I had the header done at the same time. It still looks good.

My headers were rusting, so ceramic coated 'em, problem solved.
My stock can was rusting, so bought a Drummer, problem solved!

Aren't the headers stainless steel?

I think it's worth it. Two reasons looks and it does block a little heat. I have been happy with mine. I did it the first winter on my 06 and have had no problems. It is blue incase you wanted to know.

You're correct, Ray. Probably CRES 301 or 316.

Stainless steel "stains less" because it spontaneously forms a protective chromium oxide layer on contact with oxygen. But it can still corrode (I shouldn't have said "rusting"), especially in the presence of other chemicals (like roadspray) and at eleveated temperatures (I've seen mine glowing in the 750C range), and at grain boundaries or near welds (due to chromium migration).

It wasn't that bad, but I coated the headers when I replaced the (heavily-rusting) muffler, admittedly mostly for aesthetics. Bonus- a little less heat radiated so better scavenging.

My headers started rusting/scaling after my first winter in which I rode a lot on salted roads.

I now use S100 Polishing Soap every so often on the headers - works great.

""Johnboy, What kind of box is that on your triple tail?""

It’s a Pelican 1300 that holds my toolkit and air compressor.

The race pipe is already ceramic coated.

""I totally misinterpreted that one....""

I know the feeling, Froggy.

The first time I heard the term Xbox, I thought it referred to a former girlfriend.
