What makes the Ulysses so popular?

If everything goes right my dealer should be picking up a new 2009 XB12X from another dealer next week. I should have it in time to take advantage of the Stimulus deal on a new motorcycle purchase. (3000.00 off MSRP, not bad)

I bought a Uly back in 2005 and traded it on my 1125R two years ago. I’ve been missing the Uly ever since. I’ve been hanging out on the “Quick Board and 1125R Board” for the last few years. The last couple of days I’ve been reading the archives of the “Big, Bad & Dirty” All the posts of adventures, new accessories, Mods, mishaps that I’ve been reading shows that Ulysses Owners love their bikes. What makes the Uly owners that much more passionate than the rest of the Buell owners? I have been a Buell owner since 1996 and have owned Lightning, Thunderbolts, Firebolts, 1125R’s, etc. They have all been passionate rides but the Ulysses is just a little more. Why? All us Uly owners know it’s a great ride, more suspension, comfy seat, etc. Is it that the bike is an Adventure Bike? Is it the lure of the next great adventure you and the Uly will be going on? My Adventure will start again Dec 30…

Ever own a Swiss Army Knife?

Put it on 2 wheels and you have the Uly.

I have yet to ask my '06 UlyX to do something that it couldn't pull off. Not only can it pull it off...but I'm usually grinning ear to ear or cackling out loud in my helmet while doing it : )

Ask it to wheelie at 100mph : )

Nothing a Uly can do that a 1125CR can't. Swap on better tires and its just as good off road. Don't get rid of your 1125, you will be missing the power when your on the Uly.

Keeping the 1125R, might trade the 99 S3 but not sure yet.

Froggy- come on now, that is pure BS. The Uly has much more composure than the CR over rough roads (paved or not); the extra suspension travel is a big plus. The Uly is damn sure a better two-up bike. It's somehow more relaxing to ride, but still has the ability to give the good adrenalin rush. Aside from passing at interstate (not necessarily legal) speeds, I don't miss the power at all when I'm on my Uly.

name another bike that loves wheeling, is happy doing 600 mile days, two ups happy, off road, and the ability to shame squids on race replicas in the twisty bits. every time i get off her I am smiling. like the nerdy chick at the bar more fun and less hassle.

The extra suspension is nice, but if you set the CR to stupidly soft settings it does a decent job off road. It does better than I can at least.

Jaybird, the CR soaks up the miles too without effort, I have put 6000 miles on mine in about 3 and a half months, it included a few 600 mile days. I love it! : )

thanks froggy for the heads up and damb you for the added temptation. I need another bike like my dog needs a second tail he is already busy casing the one he has and would just be overwhelmed with indecision if he had a second to chose.

What makes the Ulysses so popular?

if you have ever ridden one, you already know the answer to that question!

I did ride a 1125CR once, I managed to get a whole 8 miles on it but I had to stop and give my legs a rest because they were cramping up so bad. I was extremely happy once I got it back to the dealer and was glad to get back on my Uly to ride home. The 1125 is a great motor but the set-up is certainly NOT for me!

Rider stature has a big influence about relative comfort of CR .vs Uly.

This has been echoed by many buyers and prospective buyers.

For instance, at 6'4" I can do a hondo on a CR then it gets grating. Put the tall bars, drop down pegs, and touring seat and its more like 150 or more.

My Uly has seen 550 mile days a couple times with more should we have had to get further.

for me another factor apart from the stuff mentioned before is:

its rare over here in the UK and compared to GS's (the new Volvo Estate - dare i say it).

It's a bike that turns heads and even one of my best mates, who hated the looks at first is starting to love them....

go for it man, you know you wont regret it!

hopping speed bumps knowing you can't bottom out speed bumps and other bumps on roads like train tracks and stuff: ) Being tall on it seeing everything. Doing Battle Trax like events on it. You can ride it in dirt bike mode or track bike mode.
I love the attention I get being a female 5"7" tall and riding it. Last time I picked it up from the shop from service 2 guys walked up and said how rare it was to see a female riding a Uly. One guy about my height was getting one his Bad web name is Anyroadanytime. Its the best touring bike I have ever owned. K
I forgot I love the ORANGE color K

OMG you okay Ulynut? I've done the same thing I crashed mine during the Total Control instructor school and got up, then picked it up with Lee Park's help and it started back up, hopped back on it and went for some more grueling training. They are tough bikes. K

I'm O.K. Did you know that Diablo Stradas really stink on hard packed snow, and stink equally bad on ice?
These bikes really are built like the proverbial brick outhouse.

rear wheel drive and snow/ice dont mix well...i cant take the uly or the 5-series touring with the snow we got here in the uk....

only the CG125 is suitable for this - as its light to pick back up - lol!!!

What makes the Uly so popular among owners is permagrin. Ya just don't get to stretch out your helmet from the inside with many other rides!

I get a real kick out of the folks whom have made the purchase recently due to the incredible deals, then come on here and basically say things to the effect of "why didn't you tell me!?".....as if we didn't!

I think I know what you meant by the title of your original post, but I wouldn't exactly call any BMC product "popular"... at least compared to the "major" marques out there.

Just my $0.02.

I think the question was answered by many here. When you ride more there is more to experience therefore more to talk about. I love the CR but my long legs would not like long trips. I'd take the Uly anywhere. I own many knives but the one I carry the most is a Swiss Army knife. That pretty much sums it up!

Character, its has character! My two vfr buddies thought I was crazy back in 06 when I purchased my Uly. They though it looked funny, was slow and prone to breakdown. Oh,and all the nasty comments about the fan! They were singing a different tune after our trip back from the Dragon. One now has a Uly and the other is selling his new strom to get one as well. Good luck, there ain't that many left up here.......

Because we are crazy. We like 1930's v twin bullet proof technology, no damn chain to take care of, loads of suspension settings, a comfortable seat, and it is AMERICAN MADE. I guess I will have to buy a Victory next time I am so mad at the mother ship for closing Buell down.
