Just passed 7500 miles on my original Stradas and they looked fine just a few weeks ago. But last week I did a 2-hour ride in cold weather (started at about 25 deg, ended up about 35 deg). When I got home there was a layer of rubber "powder" residue on the kickstand. Turned out I had worn the rear tire down to the steel belts. Do winter temps affect these tires, make them so hard and brittle that they wear faster?

Anyone tried the new Pirelli Angels?

7,500 miles!?! That's 2,500 more miles than I ever got out of a set of Stradas. At the end of their life, I have noticed that they look fine and then just suddenly wear out and let go. Next thing you know; you see steel. This has happened to me twice. I obviously don't know your riding style but 7.5K is pretty good for Stradas.

I believe the cold will make them last longer, as they are sticking less to the road and providing less rolling resistance. On the other hand, the cold will drop your PSI, and as result that will increase wear.

Stradas blow butt. I skulled my ONLY set in 1800 miles.

Yeah, they look fine and then POOF you are spinning on the cords.

They REALLY need to mold in some wear bars.

As Froggy said, lower temps cause lower pressure which results in more squirming which generates more heat which makes them wear faster.

Got 10,500 miles out of my rear Strada. The wear at the very end is fast.

The guy who works on my bike (um, when I can't do it myself...) told me it was way unusual for me to have gotten over 8000 miles off of my Diablos (or any motorcycle tire for that matter). I just assumed tires were tires in that I didn't need to replace my truck tires until after 45,000 miles!. What gives with our bikes? Clueless dude (me) needs answers.

10k miles on the Strada's on my XB, still plenty of tread. No clue how long it will last.

You can't compare motorcycle tires to truck tires. Apples and oranges. Please put truck tires on your bike and see what happens. : )

I was in a rush and didn't get to finish my comment. If you want to have a semi fair comparison, compare tires on a Corvette. They also use soft compounds like motorcycle tires. A quick stroll on the web reports people typically getting 12-15k miles out of a set of tires. You need to also factor in that motorcycle tires are under more stress than car tires due to different driving dynamics. Oh, and each tire on a quite expensive, here is the cost of a single rear:

And here is a single front:

(Please buy those tires to cover my lawyer fees! : D)

Jeez! Some of you guys wear out road tires faster than I run through race tires!

Current Strada rear is at about 13k miles. I think that it's about done. I was over 6k on the OE Sync when it was perforated. The Sync still had a fair amount of wear left.

Motorcycle tires do indeed wear much quicker than auto/truck tires. There are two good reasons. One reason is that a bike tire generally has more stress on the contact patch. A lot of weight is concentrated in a small spot and there's never time when the bike is really 'stable'. Second reason is that motorcycle tires generally have softer tread compounds. A little slippage is OK for a car or truck. When riding a motorcycle, not so much.

Tire pressure is a HUGE factor in getting the most wear from a tire. NOT the pressure on the sidewall of the tire, but the pressures that are in the owner's manual or on the frame sticker. These are pressures determined by the tire manufacturer for certain load levels. Buell looked at the tire manufacturer's load charts and chose pressures that are appropriate for our bikes.
