Sorry guys, i know this has been on loads before but i couldn't find the post.

Im starting to get the pause on my 09 uly and its a big one sometimes.

Ive cleaned the battery posts, the 2 ground points on the frame next to the battery and the connectors going onto it and also cleaned the ground under the airbox on the frame and engine bracket.

Still getting the pause, is there something else i have missed somewhere?
I checked the battery, thats good

Thanks
David

Davidxt,I have the same thing going on on my 09 X. It doesn't do it every start, but only occasionally. The first time it happened the bike was really hot so I assumed it was because of that. But it happened again the other day before the first ride and the bike was stone cold. I checked the battery and it had plenty of juice. I haven't load tested it yet. Maybe someone who has fixed this problem will chime in.

I don't get it when going TO work (fresh off the tender) but I do get a little pause when going back home (no tender all night)

The XT's pause doesn't worry me a whole lot. My X1 pauses too but has never failed to start due to battery/starter issues. Even turning over 200+ lbs compression each cylinder, the factory original starter and battery from 2002 do their jobs flawlessly.

What oil are you running? Switching to a lighter oil in the winter helps reduce this.

Don't worry about it. Every Harley I've owned does the same thing. Long stroke high compression engines will do this unless your battery is brand new or charged constantly. Keep your finger on the button and let it work it's way past the compression. If you let up it can kick back on you which is harder on everything. Checking your grounds was the right thing to do but if they are good and it's still doing it try charging it overnight and seeing if that helps. If it doesn't do it anymore then you know your battery is aging yet still not bad. My stock battery started doing the same thing and I thought I might have to replace it but it kept working for a couple more years. Bottom line, don't worry about it, go have fun!

When I got my 06 Uly this summer, it started doing that pause thing. Got so bad that it would do the chatter sound too. After reading numerous posts on the topic, I decided to just to all the fixes at once: new battery, the "77 connector fix" and switch the ground strap to grounding directly on the frame. Haven't had a single issue since. It would have been nice to try each fix independently to see which one was the most effective, but it got me up and riding much quicker and with the least amount of frustration.
