Anybody try the American Sport Bike kit with the Buell controls? The wife asked what I wanted for Christmas and I think it's going to be grips and the American Sport Bike set up ends up being about 50 bucks cheaper, couldn't find any reviews though.

I have the Buell setup and love it. I might be doing the American Sport Bike one, as I need to buy 3 more kits and thats a lot of dough spent. I haven't heard anything bad about Al's stuff, in fact if Al sells it, you know its good as he tests everything and won't sell garbage.

If it's the "Dual Star" setup then I recommend it. Mine cost about $30 and works great. Use mine with a Gerbing temp controller, as I recall.

I put on the American Sport Bike kit and love it. Easy to install, an easy afternoon's work. Hi switch makes your hands sweat, and low keeps em nice and warm. The OE switch looks, well, factory. I really prefer the thick grips they sell with the kit to the original, much nicer. You'll have to cut the end out of them for the hand guard mount, and I wish I had taken more care in doing this. Mine look like a rat chewed the ends out.
I'd certainly recommend this, or just get the dual star elements and your own switch & go cheapo, then you could ask your wife for a new jacket or something.

Question for you factory heated grip guys, do they seem to cycle? Like, on a very long ride I noticed they would be on full bore, then not quite so powerful for a while then strong again. Definitely not just, on or off. That normal?

Sucks riding in 20 deg temps with rain and snow and having numb fingertips even though I've got heated grips, wtf

I've had both: on my 12R I installed Al's Dual-Element setup under Traction Grips with a Uly switchpod, and on my Uly the Heated Hand Grip Kit came stock.

Heat output: tie. Same outstanding performance on both. Low is usually enough!

Looks/feel: tie. Both Traction and Uly grips have similar feel and diameter.

Power use: advantage Buell Kit. 18W on high vs 40W, IIRC. The AUX circuit can easily handle the draw. The factory kit is slightly more efficient because the elements are embedded, instead of being taped right to the metal bar.

Installation: advantage Buell Kit. They're plug-n-play. Gotta connectorize Al's, but still easy enough. The element-side of connector 189A is a three-place pin-side Deutsch (DTM06-3S ithink). If you can find these, the heating elements will plug right into the Uly switchpod. Otherwise, gotta cut the socket-side 189B off and crimp on a bunch of insulated automotive spades.

Total cost: advangate Al's setup. Less than a c-note, vs. twice that for the Buell Kit. The switchpod is the most expensive component, but you could just cob up a weatherproof SPDT switch from Rad Hack.

Integration: advantage Al's setup. The Buell Kit doesn't work well with my BreakAway cruise control. The cable exits from the thumb flange, and I need to cut that off to make room. I realize this isn't a problem for most.

One edit- I keep mentioning Traction grips, just know that they're difficult to implement.

The right side comes pre-installed on the throttle tube, so you have to jam a screwdriver down to break 'em free. Also must razor off the end caps to accomodate the handguard barends.

I did the few extra minutes of work because I like their carpal-tunnel friendly shape. -Nadz

Final edit: SWITCH GEAR, RIGHT is N0158.5AA . Al doesn't have them listed on his site, but American Sport Bike does source them (or did as of this spring).
