I just completed my winter storage oil change today , and I experienced the same type of mild frustration today as I have for my previous 2 oil changes.

It is just me, or does it take everyone else forever to fill the swingarm with oil? I find that with the bike on the sidestand, the filler hole is not really angled properly to get the oil in there. This time I bought a new, longer funnel, and put the sidestand on a piece of wood to level the bike out, but it still seemed to take forever to get the oil in there.

Is it just me?

If it's as cold there as it is here...that doesn't make oil flow any faster.

I cut the top off a quart to make a "funnel", and just drop it in the filler. Pour into that and done.

Heat does help, though...cuts down on bubble-sealing inside the swingarm and lets it fill the crevices better.

I just pour it in, never had an issue, and never used a funnel either.

Froggy, you don't spill some everywhere? That was my problem in the past.

It is cold here, so I'm sure that didn't help at all... I'll have to try my funnel next spring when it's warmer and maybe I'll be happier!

I have a funnel with a 1-foot long extension. The tube of the extension is skinny enough to slip into the fill hole and the funnel is large enough to hold the bottle of oil.

When it is cold, I also bring the bottles in the house to warm up. Warm oil flows faster. I also use synthetic as that flows even faster. Changing oil in the cold was actually the thing that convinced me to stick with synthetic.

I store the funnel with a shop rag in the funnel part to keep it clean.

So how much oil do they hold and do you read the level on its side stand or vertical. I don`t have an owners manual yet as the dealer had to order it.My xt was a rental unit and had 3000 miles on it when they put her for sale, the manual disappeared before I bought it.

I use the 1 quart size oil with the spout to one side and just stick it in the hole.

Cold Check (Pre-Ride)

Do not allow oil level to fall below MIN mark on dipstick or sight gauge. Doing so can result in equipment damage and/or equipment malfunction. (00573d)


Do not overfill oil tank. Doing so can result in oil carryover to the air cleaner leading to equipment damage and/or equipment malfunction. (00190a)


Do not switch lubricant brands indiscriminately because some lubricants interact chemically when mixed. Use of inferior lubricants can damage the engine. (00184a)

NOTES:

An accurate engine oil check can only be made with the engine at normal operating temperature (Hot Check).

See Filler Plug/Dipstick Location: XB Models (Firebolt Shown). Remove the oil filler plug/dipstick and visually check for oil in the tank.
NOTE:

If the oil pressure lamp stays lit after starting the engine, immediately shut the engine off.

If oil is not visible in the tank, screw the dipstick back in and start the engine.

Let the engine idle for 30 seconds then shut the engine off

Remove the oil level dipstick and visually check for oil in the tank.

If there is no oil in the tank, add oil in 6.8 fl oz 0.2 L increments.

Screw the filler plug/dipstick in completely and remove to read the dipstick.

When oil is present on the bottom of the dipstick, perform a hot check.
Hot Check

Ride the motorcycle for 10 minutes and 5 mi 8 km to bring the engine to normal operating temperature.

On the sidestand, idle the motorcycle for one to two minutes. Turn the engine OFF.

Remove the dipstick and wipe the dipstick clean.
NOTE:

Do not over tighten oil filler/dipstick cap.

Screw the dipstick fully into the oil tank.

See Oil Level Operating Range: XB Models . Remove dipstick and read the oil level.

Below the lower line: Add only enough oil until the level reads between the upper and lower lines. Recommended viscosity depends upon ambient temperature. Refer to Recommended Engine Oils.

Between the upper and lower lines: It is safe to operate the motorcycle.

At (or above) the upper line: Drain oil until the level reads between the upper and lower lines.

Screw the dipstick fully into the oil tank.
