The deals were just too good to pass up. I used to own a '06 Ulysses and '07 Lightning Long. I miss those bikes. So when I found a new 2009 Uly (XB12X) at a great price, I had to go for it. My wife says since I had it on my Xmas list, she's done shopping now.

Now what? I think I need the rider comfort kit, but as much as I've searched, I can't tell whether or not I should get the ECM update. I know the book says it's not required, but needed to maximize the benefit. If all the update does is minimize the fan run time, I can do without it.

And what about exhaust? I think I'd like the sound and weight savings of an aftermarket, but if it causes decel popping, I can live without it. My '06 had the Buell race exhaust and race ECM with race filter. That was a great set-up. It ran perfect for my taste. But now the '09s don't appear to lend themselves to swapping ECMs. How do you get them to run right with an exhaust and/or airbox mod?

And what about the seat? The seat on my '06 was the most comfortable stock seat I've ever owned. Now this one is lower. Seat height is not an issue for me. I could flat-foot the '06. Is the new seat as comfortable for long rides as the '06 for us taller dudes?

Any non-speculative help is appreciated.

The only difference between the comfort kit and standard versions of the firmware are the different fan operation parameters. The comfort kit programming factors in speed and several other factors to keep fan usage at a minimum.

Your stock exhaust causes decel popping, but its more of a piff and hard to hear, plus it is tuned to minimize it. You can put whatever pipe you want on, and once your tuned you should have next to no popping.

The 06 seat will fit, but good luck finding one.

Hey there, I just bought mine Saturday. I have done the headlight mod just now and hooked up my ZUMO. I have the outdoorsman racks on order and should be here in a week. I have the Junior 40 liter saddlebags and top case waiting to be mounted. I also got a great deal and the dealership was very gracious. Ocean County HD/Buell in Lakewood NJ. I was very happy with this transaction and took my fiance out all day in the NJ Pine Barrens. What a great intimate day. She loved it. I am a happy man.

That's my question. How do I tune it?

Is the "06 seat" the same part number as the "tall seat"? N0025.1AKAYCE is the tall seat.

If I could do it over again (someday I may know how) I would get the comfort kit and skip the ecm change. Also...if you could flat foot your 06 with the 06 tall seat...you will be wanting to find one somewhere. I have an 09 with the tall seat on it. Long-legged boy here.

" ...And what about exhaust?"

Direct Link which enabled us to tune parameters within the ECM on many an XB with numerous modifications and enhancements done under load and on a dyno has finally admitted that 2008 & 2009 XB are problematic for them to tune and with the demise of Buell production, they will not be supporting the product anymore.

I've got a 2007 tuned with a Pro-Series pipe and we race an XB up Pikes Peak, I can assure you that the stock exhaust does a great job of maintaining mid range torque without sacrificing low end torque or high rpm power. We can tune for one but at the compromise of another. Erik and the elves did a great job applying the Hemholtz principle and on my 2010 Uly I am not going to mess with the exhaust.

On Joules, the 2007 Uly, tuning took a lot of heat out, and coupled with right side air scoop, had the fan running far less often. But also, mileage went lower. I had a stock run back from Toas, NM where I got 64mpg doing about 75mph for most of the trip.

Besides, I understand the guys in South Park really frown on noisey motorcycles.

I also bought an 09 a couple of weeks ago. Mine has the comfort kit with the latest flash. I took it out for about 160 mile run last weekend and noticed the fan mostly on during stops with the motor not running. I do think it came on once or twice while running at speed(could have been more but didn't notice), and a couple of times waiting for lights to change. This was 2up in 80 some degree heat, the bike has 7500 miles on it. So I guess the Direct link system would be a waste of $$? I would like to be able to tweak this bike as well.

Jammer - Thanks for the update. That's good to know.

Based on that, I'm going to leave the exhaust stock. I do think I'll have the header pipes ceramic coated black...just for cosmetics and a little heat reduction. I'll also do the comfort kit and tall seat. Thanks folks!

I just put a tall seat on my 09, and, it is miles better. I ordered it through my local, Precision in Pawtucket, RI.

A couple weeks after ordering it, and, not arriving, Tripp tried tracking it down to find it obsolete. Tripp not only found me a seat at another dealer, but, got an extra. He might still have it. Better move quick. Supposedly, the seat is the same as the 06, but, with a different cover.
