Hello to all; just joined BadWeather!

Just purchased my XB12X Ully last week; with no bags. A riding buddy who owns a BMW F800 GS has these HUGE (Aluminum?) side bags that are Non-OEM from BMW.

Rather than getting the "Standard" OEM Hard Bags for my Buelly are there LARGER after market hard bag set ups I can get for my Buelly? Websites, catalogs, resources, places to look?

I'm just kind of worried that after the closing of Buell the factory OEM bags offered may not be available in the near future. And I know I need some hard bags.

I searched through the archives as best I could for an answer before posting my question.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

OEM Buell bags are made by Hepco-Becker. All their bags mount to the racks the same way. Get OEM racks, and you can put ANY H-B bag on it (note: I'd get the racks for the Outdoorsman bags, they mount the bags slightly differently - further back on the bike - which gives even more options).

Pelican also makes bags that will work, but I don't remember who makes the racks offhand. Either that, or pelican makes the racks and someone else makes the bags.

I run the OEM Buell Journey (standard XT) side bags, and have a H-B 50L topcase on the factory case rack. CAVERNOUS.

You will have no problem.

Pelican 1440 Top Loaders on stock racks with Happy Trails mounting hardware.
This conversion will require the removal of the triple tail to function properly (lids won't open with the tail/handrail assembly attached).

Extra fuel or whatever storage:

If you want oem, you better get on it. My seat that was ordered a couple weeks ago is now discontinued. Those bastards are gonna end up screwing us, no matter what we're told.

I'd guess that parts required to keep the bikes running might be available as long as they claim, but, the stuff like bags, seats, fluff etc. is not long for this world.

Problem with the Pelican (I have custom made Pelican luggage) is the weight of the bags themselves uses up most the available carrying capacity.

The good news is that if you drive off a cliff your stuff will be intact and if you drive into a lake it'll be dry.

Hepco-Becker made the bags long before Buell used them and availability shouldn't be a problem.

We'll see. . . .I do share some of your concerns about HD's commitment to support.

Where'd the FUEL BOTTLE come from? I have two of those tractor document tubes and the bottle looks like a perfect fit.

That fuel bottle is probably the same size as an MSR or Primus you can pick up at REI.

Some Brunton bottles are extremely cheap at REI.com right now.

I believe Sigg stopped making fuel bottles a few years ago, but I may be wrong.

Most 1 liter fuel bottles will fit, the Sig is a dead-on fit.
Court, my Pelicans with the luggage tow handle and wheels removed weigh less than 7 pounds with about 31L carrying volume. I got rid of the HB cases immediately after getting the Uly. I don't like clamshells/side loading luggage. It's a personal quirk - YMMV.

Touratech was my first choice. Used them for over a year now and I have no regrets. I like the "Adventure" look better than the "commuter" look of either of the OEMs or anything else on the market for that matter. The Pelican's are nice, but for the internal space you get, there's a lot of external bulk due to all the flanging and gusseting required to make them strong.
Here's my current set-up, but a Happy Trails top case will be my next, and last luggage addition.

I personally think the standard bags look much better on the Ulysses rather than the 'agricultural' aluminium ones - although having top-loaders are easier to pack.
They hold loads of kit, are very light but strong (dropping the bike only scratched them).

You could always come up with your own solution, if you're up for a project.

Didn't want to spring for the Pelicans and went with some military surplus night vision boxes instead, and since I didn't have a rack/hoops I had to fab that as well. Turned out well enough, and the small profile keeps the drag down on super-slab.

Happy Trails - this is the 4th bike these have been used on. The mount is a HT KLR mount that I re-engineered.

I like the top loaders a lot better than the side loaders.

Does any one know if you can get side case brackets anywhere other than buell? I have looked but havn't found any. I just bought a 2010 UlyX and am not sure if I want bags on it or not. My fear is that If I don't get them now... I won't.

Touratech also sells the brackets separately. They are strong as hell and with a little ingenuity, most any bag can be made to fit on them.

CHEAP is an understatement . . for less than $6 each I ordered a couple. . .now I jsut need to find a place to mount them.

Product Unit Price Quantity Savings Total
Brunton Fuel Bottle - 0.6 Liters - '09 Overstock *

REI-OUTLET Item# 7939930017
Price each: $5.93
Quantity: 2
Savings: $23.34 $11.86
Subtotal $11.86
Standard Shipping $5.99
(How we calculate sales tax) Tax $1.57

Where did the aluminum sidecases (I probably read right past it) come from and how much? They fit the standard Outdoorsman racks?

The MSR fuel bottles are available in a lot of sizes.
The 11oz is good for spare oil and will not leak. There is even pour caps available. They even fit in a chain saw case.

For homecoming i am going to mount one bottle for fuel and one for oil on the under tail of the Blast.

The Primus Gourmet II Cook Set - '08 Closeout for $29.93 works great. Stainless Steel so it will last for ever and is stable on most liquid fuel stoves.

20 oz. is pretty small for fuel - you might want to consider MSR-tpe 30-33oz bottles.

IIRC, the 33oz MSR bottle fits into the Agr Supply canister and the TT double holder, as well.
And two 33oz bottles gives you over 1/2 gallon of extra fuel... so a conservative 20 miles.

I ordered 6 from REI with free shipping to a store. Great stocking stuffer.

I did say EXTREMELY CHEAP, so not to much of an understatement.. hehe

I like the stoutness of them compared to the tall MSR 30's. Great for camping.

That Primus cook set is a nice set Crackhead, but heavy at almost 2 pounds.

I would spend a little bit more and get a similar set in titanium that will last forever as well and would have less then half the weight of the steel.

I prefer Stainless Steel because i can hammer it back into shape, don't have to worry about Teflon.
The above set is nice for car camping. Most of the weight is in the frying pan. It is a nice frying pan with a thick bottom.
When i backpack i just take the 1.7 pot and lid.

Primus Gourmet Mini Cook Set - '09 Overstock for $21.93
would be better for 2-3 people camping. I will probably buy this set to because i could take the frying pan when i hike for some fresh fish. Just remember a small container of EVOO.

Are you hitting people in the head with your pots?... ahhh.. your name makes sense now, ouch... hehehe jk

I've never had to try and hammer any of my titanium back in to shape, they hold their shape well as long as you don't jump on em. The stainless steel would probably be better in that regard.
