Found on a fellow Badwebbers facebook. Angriest I have been since this ordeal went down. Wish I could be dumpster diving there!

Sad

I got that in an email. I don't have details, but they probably couldn't be sold for legal reasons. It is common in the auto industry for prototype/concept vehicles to be destroyed rather than sold.

I can't vouch if that was the case here, but it wouldn't surprise me.

You would think they could at least sell off some of the parts. There's so much there.

I have a friend that works for the MoCo in the experimental type dept. He told me that when a test mule is used up & they are done with it, the bikes are destroyed. He said a MoCo employee accompanies these bikes to the scrapper and witnesses the destruction to verify the entire bike is destroyed. It does seem like a waste of parts, but I'm sure it's a write off.

I'm thinking a raffle or auction for the wheels, tires, and other parts.

How many Buell employees losing their job could the funds benefit?

Chad -
Unfortunately, I really don't think Harley gives a $hit about Buell or its employees.

Those are actually all of the bikes that had bad rear bearings.

I worked for a large Honda/Yamaha shop that started selling Honda cars in the late 70's.
They made so much money on the cars they ended up closing the bike side of the business.

They ended up throwing all the parts they had in stock into several dumpsters. They posted armed guards on the dumpsters, who followed them all the way to the crusher!

In the Late 80's I did some work for Honda at their headquarters in Cal. They had a warehouse full of brand new bikes in crates that did not sell. They were not allowed to take them apart to sell the parts (something about being used parts). They were all heading for the crusher.

I also saw an Acura NSX that was a test car (No VIN if I recall) that was headed to the crusher! I was told "you never saw that".

But they did have a nice collection of bikes (I assume they came out of those same crates) that the executives would pickup to take "out to lunch" : ). I remember everyone wanted to ride the CX500 turbo.

Funny as I said in the the other thread, that it would take 10 Uly's to match the new Multi : D

A buddy of mine has one in mint condition - what a great motorcycle...perfect S/T machine, IMHO.

The legalities of getting parts from scrapped manufacturer vehicles is incredible.

I worked at the GM Proving Grounds and watched as New?(whatever) vettes were lifted up and the tires were slashed, then the wheels broken and then were loaded onto a trailer headed to a crusher.....it's just the way things have gotta be...

In a country overrun by too many litigious people enabled by too many lawyers, it's just the way things have gotta be...

Remember the Mazdas from the Cougar Ace? They crushed all 4703, mostly due to fears of liability.

Car and Driver article

Still, that photo of excellent bikes being trashed like hour-old McNuggets is depressing.
