So yeah with everyone buying new Buells I was starting to get a little jealous, and this deal happened to come along.....

Granted its not a new Buell but its a Buell that has been near and dear to my heart since I made the modifications to it.

The Buell I am referencing is the 2005 CityX/Uly cross I did back in December of last year. I went through a divorce and sold it to a board member and have been trying to get it back pretty much ever since I sold it.

So now on Saturday I fly into Richmond, VA to pick up my bike and then I will be riding straight through. It should be about an 18 hour drive im thinking.

So im still trying to work out the details about the route, the biggest thing is do I want to pay tolls or no. Anyone have any insight, should I head north and go through PA then hit the southern tip of Lake Eire or should I cut west right away and head through West Virginia then go through Columbus and Indianapolis.

BTW here is a picture of my baby....

I would want to take the southern route. I just have no love for the slab in PA.

Congrats on getting her back.

+100 on what he said. left pennsylvania over 26 years ago and only went back for a short stay one time since then and have no reason to ever go back. besides taxes the roads are some of the worst in the nation.

I like PA, but I would still take the southern route. No telling what type of weather your going to run into between Chicago and Washington on the northern route.

The Turnpike in WV is still fun at 70 mph.... big sweeping turns, hills... and 3 tolls at a $1.25... bummer..
Watch out for our 4 legged friends, the rut is in full swing.

Congrats on the buy back.

Chris-

Glad to see you got her back! I would swing south if anything for the slightly warmer temps and the fact I hate paying tolls. Have a safe trip.

no tolls... take 64 to 81 north to 50 east

50 kicks ASS.... by the time you a tired of running the twisties, it turns into a pretty nice 4 lane into OH.
Then take 50 to 33 to C-bus. 33 is now all 4 lane except a small section in Nelsonville.

Its a pretty good route. I have went to DC that way a few times.

As others may be able to attest to, try to avoid getting caught speeding in Virginia. They require you to come to court for the violation and if you do not show they can revoke your license (as I recall). My brother's wife got caught speeding coming back to Pa from their vacation in Fl and she had to go back. Someone flew in from California as well. Just an FYI. Have fun!!

Hey Guys thanks for the ideas on the trip!

Pete-Yes I plan on making this my fulltime bike so the TWAT next year WILL be on this! Hell if I get it to exactly where I want it, I may even put the Uly up for sale. That a tough call though.

Mark-Hey Im showing a 100 miles of 33 and then I hit 50 for a little over 100 miles then back on 33. So are 50 and 33 the same road at any point? I dont have an atlas around me right now so I cant look.

I will do my best to update this post during my journey as well guys!

Black51- Thanks for the tip. I am usually really good about speeding.....I cannot afford any higher insurance premiums since I insure 5 fricken bikes now!

Speeding in VA only requires a court appearance if it is reckless (20 over or faster than 80.) Unless you are running through small towns, you are generally safe running 10 over. (Knock on wood, don't prove me wrong, and I won't prove myself wrong.)

50 and 33 come together in Athens, OH, and that is it as far as I can remember.

VA speeding is only as much fun as other states. I got 'congratulated' for doing 78 in a 65 on the way to Buelltoberfest - no court appearance required, but they do have a goofy damn "choose your own adventure"-style fee schedule on the second (yes...*second*) page of their citations.

Smythe County is now $126 richer, thanks to me : )

Alright well my trip is complete. Unfortunately nothing really worked out for me on this trip. The weather was beautiful and the bike ran great but I realized about 300 miles into the ride that it just "aint" my Uly.

I absolutely love the 9 platform and power delivery but the suspension, seat, and buffeting was no good for an extended trip. So now after the 22 hour ride, 7 states and 991 miles I am honestly thinking that my Mini-Uly failed at what I wanted to do with it.

So its either back to the drawing board or I am going to sell it and focus on the Uly.

I know the feeling... rode the TT for the most part of the day yesterday and when I got home it had developed a oil leak on the rear rocker box cover....

So I rode the Uly to work today... now thats what I'm talking 'bout

The Uly is hands down the better bike.
but i have a spare everything in case the Uly heads south.... knock on wood.

glad you made it! .... something about the Uly makes it much more than the sum of the parts!

Go WV higher speed limits and no tolls as long as you avoid I-64 around Charleston area. PA road quality sucks

Well Ive done a lot of thinking today about the Mini. I am torn between putting it back to a CityX appearance and keep it, or sell it as is. Its kind of silly to sell it just a day after I bought it, but I dont think it will suit my purpose unless I spend a couple grand on it.

For those of you who dont know, I was looking to make the bike into something that I could run the ALCAN 5000 with in August. I originally signed up with my Uly but Ive always felt the Uly was too tall for me and I never felt comfortable off road on it so I wanted to get something that was a little shorter with smoother power delivery, so I made the Mini. Now after doing the 1000 mile ride yesterday on it I know there is no way my body will take 5000 miles on the AlCan without a lot of work to it. So in the end I think I will just outfit the Uly for the trip instead.

Froggy- You may be right, but I just dont know if the TT was what I was looking for either. I loved the looks of the bike but I ride enough that I need some wind protection. Maybe I should just buy a spare Uly!

Mark-Good luck with the rocker box leak.
