From a bike perspective, what parts/tools are required carry items. Is a spare belt really necc? I've got my own list of things I've brought previously on DS rides on an XT, but this will be my first time on anything less than paved with the big beasty.  | ||

I've seen guys take off with spare clutch cables tied to their frame, a spare belt tied to the triple tail, tire patch kits, air pumps, and anything else you could name. Personally, I don't know how far you are going to get to your 90miile off road, but I would carry a belt if it is any kind of distance. Worst case scenario you don't use it, but to need one and not have one would be a different story. Also keep in mind that any spare parts you buy now will be parts you don't need to buy in the future. | ||

i would bring a tire repair kit with the co2 inflaters, an extra set of levers, a bunch of zipties,basic tools and a cell phone. 90 miles isnt that long of a ride, but these things will help if you run over a nail or lay it down. on my last GLDSMC ride, i covered 80 miles with a flat rear tire in about 3 hours. it sucked. | ||

I did two weeks in Colorado on and off road. I had a tire plugger and co2 cartridges. I needed nothing, no problems at all. It's always a roll of the dice. Murphy's a bastard you know! If you have a few miles on your bike, get a new belt and put it on now. Your old stretched belt will be much easier to put on while on the side of the road. You can clean the red loctite off the screws and put them back with blue. Hopefully your old belt will rot under the seat before you need it but peace of mind can go a long way. Have fun! | ||

Last time I took a ride like that it was about a 275 mile day with about 100 miles of it off road (forest service and logging roads). I rode with a friend on a v strom. We took nothing special with us. I had the factory tool kit, of course. I don't think his suzuki had one. We never needed any of that shit. Not one loose bolt. | ||

My factory kit will fit under the seat. It is a tight fit, the tools need to be arranged so that it folds into thirds, but does not spread too much. It will fit tightly between the rails. Mark SE AZ | ||

My '06 came with a tiny tool kit. Lotsa extra room under the seat with it in there. | ||

+1 on tire plugs and the air pump.....wire ties and a bit of duct tape wrapped around a 'pony' coke bottle with some engine oil in it......like me, my Uly sometimes drools a little when taking a nap...DAMHIK | ||

Extra fuel even in a little MSR container. My last trip to Yellowstone, it was cold and drizzly, and body sore. I still got a fire going. | ||

bearings, if you crossing water, creek splitting, water loggin, and chasing puddles. A set of the bearings. DAMHIK and if you are gonna get aggressive, axle, axle shim, rear brake caliper, rear belt pully, belt, lower belt guard.... and upgrade your handquards now to something with some reinforcement. But then again, maybe I just break shiat .... alot. | ||

I could see a belt, a tire repair kit and a "fall over kit" (levers & shift linkage). IMO (yours may vary), anything other than that is approaching paranoid. | ||

Awesome, tx guys, lots of good tips here. That's a clever idea to use the coke bottle with the duct tape on it to stash some spare oil, I love it, made sure to get one at lunch the other day just so I could have the bottle lol. Will bring tire plugs for certain, debating if I want to lug a mini-air compressor or not at this point. Alternative is a small mountain bike hand pump, slow, but functional. Also have some MSR bottles I'll use for a little fuel, debating the whole belt thing, its $175 so a fairly pricey spare, but I suspect I'd be offering my kingdom for a belt should mine break out in BFE. Total ride won't be super long, sort of a mini-weekend touring trip out and around our local mountain roads, with stretches of fire roads and maybe some double track. Total trip will likely not be much over 500mi, one night of camping, that sort of thing. I'll try to get some pix. PS: What is this factory tool kit everyone refers to? | ||

It is a $99 kit...got mine from Buell Parts I think...or Latus Motors. Neat accessory...probably first to go "Unavailable" at some point. |
