I have researched intercom systems and I am getting ready to buy Autocom as it fits my requirements.

My question is where do others mount your systems of choice on your Uly ?

I have all the bags accept the tank bag, but I would not be happy with the system exposed to theft in a tank bag.

I have the under seat bag, but it's full of tools. I will put my Mp3 player in my handlebar bag.

There is an old thread on here called "Autocom on a Uly" or something like that. I want to say it was Maximum that did it, he stuffed it in the tail right in between the light and the seat latch.

My second Autocom thread moved the unit in between the battery and fuse box because I had the BAS recall done which took up the space in the tail.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/284619.html

Because of excessive heat in the battery area I later moved the Autocom back to the tail. I had Odie modify the BAS bracket to give me the room I needed...but I can't seem to find that thread that showed the pictures.

i got a chatterbox multi sport that clips right to my helmet, i can swap it from my dirt helmet to my street helmet really quick, theres no wires to the bike and when the wife comes with, she just plugs her helmet into the back of the unit.

she loves it
i keep "forgetting" to charge it lol.

One of the reasons I went with the autocom is I don't have to keep charging it : )
Plus batteries life gets shorter everytime you use them.

Plus I like they way I can interface it to everything accept the kitchen sink.
The fact all Autocom was 50% off put it into reach of my budget. I got a 2 rider setup including a cable for bike to bike radio, adapter to use my in ear monitors (14db sound isolation) for under $250. But they did not have the push to talk cable. (which I would like to have)

I just wish I could find the pinouts for the cables so I can build my own for different Ham radios I might want to use. Maybe convert the flash to pass button to a push to talk.

Maximum, I read your threads, but did not see the one where you moved it back to the tail again. With the rider comfort kit, to you think next to the battery is to hot for the autocom?

Well were off to a good start. Only problem is I also need to incorporate a switch to turn off VOX to the hand held if you plan on talking to the passenger without going over the "air waves".
But that don't need to be on the handlebars.

I have the AutoCom mounted in the handle bar bag on my Uly. I have it set up with my cell phone, my MP3 player, a Motorola FRS/GMRS two way, and my Garmin GPS all feeding signals into the AutoCom. I have the phone on auto answer and I use the AutoCom push to talk for the Motorola two way radio. And I usually listen the Audio Books I have recorded on my MP3 player or if I am riding in the twistes I listen to some good hot rock it helps with the tempo. I have made a little dash covered with Velcro that I have mounted on the handlebar cross bar & I have velcrow on the back of my MP3, Motorola, and cell phone so I just stick them on & go. I have the AutoCom powered either battery direct or I can also plug it into the Aux plug in so everything shuts off with the key. But most of the time I have it battery direct so I can talk on the phone or two way with the bike off. When I receive a phone call it rings twice then it answers & most of the time the person calling does not even know I am riding a motorcycle.

Towpro: I think the the battery location will be fine with the comfort kit...but I really like the BAS bracket mod in order to put the Autocom in the tail. I'll have to look a little harder for the write up...I think I did it around December 2007. If nothing else, I can try to find the pictures on my computer and post them tonight (late).

Yup, that's it! I guess I never did a full write up on it. But a little cutting and bending and it made for a nice platform for the Autocom. Plus I use the accessory plug to power it...makes for easy disconnect. Good job finding the picture!

Thanks. I will look into doing the bracket mod this weekend, and see if the cables are long enough to go where I want them.

I am thinking of putting the front plug on the back of the air box at the seat junction (where I can see it before I try to get off the bike), but it would end up being pointed UP which would collect water.

Next job is to look for some kind of cap I can use to seal the autocom connectors when not in use. A spring loaded cover that seals with an O ring would be nice.

I used a very small tank bag w/ the autocom unit in it and also the cb radio so that I can adjust channels, squelch and volume. Used same clips as the standard bag so it is an easy on and off, just lock it in trunk. got bag from an online person and it is very small. I have it hard wired to bike w/marine pass throughs on bag. I also have GPS/XM radio and radar detector on bars w/ram mounts and they plug into front of tank bag when using the autocom or into ear buds when riding solo. Works well for me, I tried under the seat but it was just too much hassle routing wires etc. this way I can just plop bag on whe riding w/others that have CB's or wife on back.
Bulkhusker how do you like the FRS radios? I am thinking of going from my corbra CB to this method, but would lose the truck traffic for radar and road conditions.

The GMRS/FRS radios work real well riding with another bike as you don't have the high level of traffic of the CB channels. The GMRS has channels that are high power where the FRS channels are all low power. The radio I use is a combination FRS/GMRS so it has several of the high power channels and you can also select a private channel so you will only have your group transmitting this makes for it much more enjoyable without all that squaking in your ear. The radio's we use also have the capability to receive the national weather service and it will scan the weather channels until they find one close to your location so you can keep abreast of the weather, this is important for those of us who live in tordado ally.
I did not mention in my last post that I also use the rider to passenger intercom feature of the AutoCom when my wife is on board and she can also take part in the telephone and or the two way radio conversations.

Buellhusker-Do you have the part #'s from Autocomm for the radio connections and also the PTT cable plus what motoral radio? I am thinking about upgrading to the GMRS/FRS system for the Wife's and my bikes.

I have a great set of earphones. I am wondering if there is a way I can duplicate this Autocom setup, use my headphones and add a high quality microphone in my helmet.

What are you folks using for the helmet?

All the ones (J&R) I've ever tried in the past were marginal at best.

I am useing ear buds w/the adaptor cord from Autocom. It has a small box built into the cord that I plug the earbuds into. This allows me to use the helmet speakers if I want to and also I have the autocom mic in either mode. The fellows I ride w/use the Autocomm earphones and also the mic and they like them. One of the fellows also uses ear plugs w/the autocm helmet speakers and xm radio. he says it works but w/ the earplugs he also got the booster from riderwearhouse for helmet speakers. Who is now selling Autcomm in the US. Seems like alot of dealers stopped carrying the product, they have been rather circumspect in explaining why they are no longer doing business w/Autocomm. I have had to order parts from England when upgrading my wife's system.

PSO, Here is the list of cables. If you click on one you will see the old number listed so you can check your local dealers parts box. Most local dealers are selling everything for 1/2 price.

I can't find a Push to Talk (1457) local so I will end up building something.

I just talked to a BMW dealer down in VA that is not dumping Autocom. He is receiving parts from the new US distributor.

PSO
I use the Active 7 Smart Autocom unit
# 24 straight headset extension leads
# 12.7 head sets
# 136 Push to Talk switch assembly
# 113 Lead single pin Motorola GMRS radio
I also use the Autocom patch cord thet I can plug in my ear buds into along with the helmet speakers but I dont recall the part number for that cord. When you purchase the Autocom system you get some of the patch cords for the telephone & passenger head set.

One other thing I did was to build some audio isolation patch cords to eliminate any ground loop issues with my GPS and MP3 player. I used some little 1:1 transformers from Radio Shack they are $3.99 each and are quite small. With the isolation between the GPS & MP3 player there is no loss of volume level between those units.
I also have a BMW K1200LT with the same Autocom set up and the bike has a built in AM-FM 6 disc CD system so I had to use the isolation transformer on the AM/FM radio input to kill the ground loop caused by the common 12 volt power source for the radio, GPS & the Autocom.
I had to build a patch cord for the Garmin GPS since the audio output of that unit is mono and the Autocom input is stero.
