As anyone who has handled the tag light may have discovered, it is fragile. While working on my triple tail I mis handled mine and it crumbled to tiny pieces.
I am looking for a light housing to replace it and am hoping someone has already gone down this road.

Have you considered a lighted license plate frame? I'm thinking about doing something like this after I install my wheelen.

I'm concerned about using a different bulb setup. I don't want to upset the ecm.

ECM could care less about the tag light. The only electrical circuit (aside from engine operation circuits) that the ECM has a hand in, is the aux outlets in the dash and under the seat.

I run LEDs in mine, on my '06 UlyX. I also have CR mirrors and LED turn signals, with an American Sport Bike LED flasher. No issues.

Odie,
If what you have is stock oem, I don't want it. It looks to me like heat from the bulb makes them brittle and fragile over time. But I'm curious what you want for one...

Dan.

Parts lookup says the Uly tag light is the same as the XB-S bikes.

I suspect, having just done the same LED swap on my S1W with the rear hugger mounted tag, that it's even the same part for an old tuber that didn't have a Firebolt-like setup, with light coming out the bottom of the main taillight housing to light the tag.

My 'conversion' on the Uly was just putting a white LED pod that I got off eBay in a pack of 5, into the Uly housing, and wiring it up. There are 4 LEDs per oval shaped pod, 12v 2 wire hookup. I used 2 pods as interior lights in my Wrangler (small enough to mount to the rollbar, hooked to the dome light circuit). One is my S1W tag light (pod in OEM taglight housing); the other is on the Uly. I put the 5th in the S2 taillight when I converted it over to Uly LED taillight circuitry. No issues on any of 'em.

Now for the tail-tidy kit and LED conversion on the CR.....

All I need is your address and I'll send you a couple. They are the stock lights that are used on S's and R's.

Odie and Dan...are you guys talking about the red oval taillight? They no workey on the Uly....

My read on this is, Dan needs the square, seperate tag light that's on the back end of a cheesegrater on the Lightnings. The Uly uses that light, down on the rear fender / mudflap thing under the tail section. The Uly taillight is ONLY red, and ONLY run/stop lighting. No tag light.

I got the triple tail fixed.
Over-engineered and heavy! That thing weighs as much as a front wheel! If my wife had not been home while I was working on it, it just might not have went back on.

I removed the button thingie and the pin from inside. It only needs one lock by my thinking and the plastic collar jobbie will do it.

Details on the triple tail fix! I hate the dual locks!

Details? Let me road test first.
So far it seems to work superbly but before we get a bunch of folks tearing down their triple tails lets make sure.

I think Froggy stated that he did this already but I never heard any details or follow up.

Did it a while ago on my '06. No issues. I did file down the collar thingy to get it to snap all the way in (mine was a little wide, never did fit quite right), but with it in place the backrest doesn't move a bit.

Makes it MUCH easier to access my topcase - keys are usually in the case latch by the time I realize the case lid is hitting the triple tail, keeping me from getting into it. Keyless operation means I can just snap/flop it out of the way, and get into my case : )

Ah! I also need the details on what to file (and how to get to it) to get the triple tail to snap in all the way. Mine doesn't snap in all the way, and therefor the plastic clip doesn't snap down all the way.

Mike,
If you have a shop manual it's a straightforward mod. Bag racks have to come off- all of them. It's more than likely your taglight won't survive.
Do you have the book?

I copied Rat. My bike never had a beaver tail, so when I was installing it I just omitted the part, I didn't file anything. No issues.
