Has anyone figured out how to order just the side racks.... ???

It seems that everyone has run into the problem of only complete kits... i.e. rack and bags or nothing at all.

What if say I laid down the bike (which i didn't) and bent the side rack (which I don't own) and needed to simply replace the factory (HB) rack.... why can't we do that???

any thoughts???

Pete, you should be able to go to your nearby H-D dealer and order these parts separately using the appropriate part numbers in the parts manual. At one time the top rack was not available separately, I believe it now is available to purchase. I bought my side racks individually.

You shouldn't have any issues getting the racks, especially if you have the part numbers handy.

I knew you would come through for me Froggy....

but I got impatient and went to the dealer and tried to get it put together.... got it done but it took quite awhile and the parts guy wasn't sure if it would work on a 2006 X... because he could only find the 2208 XT parts book.. and he wouldn't order it until we were sure it would work and he was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to take the parts back if they didn't work... I don't plan to order until christmas time anyway.

BUT.... Froggy you rock in my books.....

one last question.... if I may....

Froggy- the pdf you posted.... those part numbers should all be the same for any Uly... correct???

I have another question but I am going to wait and stay focused on this one at the moment

Cheers-pete

Yes all the same.

That PDF predates the XT, so a few numbers have been changed, and some of the unavailable stuff can be obtained. The XB 08YA parts book has all the part numbers.

All Uly tails are the same.

I ordered all of the racks and all of the hardware by individual part#'s. Drove the dealer a bit nuts (I don't know why I had all the #'s written down)but it was no problem. Getting the aluminum bags from Germany has taken over a year already though. FWIW, I would order the service manual and parts book for my bike as well as the rack, two very usefull books.

Froggy or anyone else-

Can I just order the Outdoorsman rack... just side case rack???

I just spent over a hour searching the archives...

People kept posting that the racks are different. Supposedly you can't put the Outdoorsman on the stock Journey case racks, but you can put the Journey on the Outdoorsman backwards.... Ratbuell tried it....

I would rather get the 40L Outdoorsman bags.

Do you absolutely have to move the rear blinkers???

Supposedly, maybe, the outdoorsman could fit on the Journey case racks but the rear pegs get in the way, and if that is the only problem I may tell the wife she is done riding with me once a year and just take them off, if that is all it takes to get the 40L Outdoorsman to work.... that may be my solution

thoughts???

Yep!

Yep!

M0232.1AUYT BRKT,RR TURN SIG RELOCATION,DESIGN BLACK Retail Price:$29.55

M0253.1AU BRACKET, CROSS BRACE, SADDLEBAG Retail Price:$29.55

M0254.1AU BRACKET, LH SADDLEBAG Retail Price:$121.80

M0255.1AU BRACKET, RH SADDLEBAG Retail Price:$121.80

Y0526.1AU TURN SIGNAL, LEFT REAR Retail Price:$47.50

Y0527.1AU TURN SIGNAL, RIGHT REAR Retail Price:$47.50

I believe that is almost everything you would need. There are various fasteners to connect it all together, but I am not sure if they are the same as for the Journey bags.

Nate - yes, you HAVE to move the turn signals.

Well...kinda.

You could just leave them in place, and put them IN the saddlebag if you wanted. But then you'd have to drill a huge hole in the bag for it to stick into.

The outdoorsman cases, as noted above and in my earlier thread, sit about 2" further back on the bike in order to clear the passenger pegs. You can NOT put the outdoorsman cases on Journey racks because they will hit (not rub, but HIT) the passenger pegs. The visual giveaway is, outdoorsman racks have the latch mechanism to the rear. If they have a front latch point...they're wrong for outdoorsman bags, they're journey racks.

The other part of the "mounted further back" equation is, they try to occupy the same real estate as the turn signals. Personally, I don't see any issue at all with relocating the signals. The kit is nicely done, cleanly finished, and plug-n-play. Much nicer than on my S2 - that was simply a "take signals off, measure xx inches back and xx inches down and drill new holes, hopefully in the right place". lol

If you have to do something different...why not mount custom signals to the topcase rack, or the sidecase racks? There's a nice flat section on the rack setup where the left-to-right-side bridge bolts up; you could mount small LED signals there with no problem. For my money, though...just use the kit.

Rat-
Does it hit the pegs and only the pegs or the actual peg bracket and pegs....???

The rear peg bracket is used in both racks so if that is the problem that solves some of my debate. If it is just the pegs.... as stated above I could probably do without the the actual pegs....

the prices I have worked up, put the Journey rack maybe $80-100 cheaper than the Outdoorsman..... money is always tight and everyone is posting some must have add on lately... barkbusters, heated grips, etc....

huh.... am I making any sense or am I missing something here and making this way more difficult than it really is...

Just stopped in at the local dealer and had him run numbers on the Outdoorsman racks....

the "turn signal" are now obsolete, and he can't order them....???

his comment was parts for 5-7 years.... accessories ...nope.... probably once gone ... they will be gone....

huh????

he said once something is termed "obsolete" in the parts system it generally mean that is it, no more....

I figure I can simply use the stock ones I am thinking and splice a extension in, right??? would end up saving me $95 bucks too....

Journey rack-...............$343 ish ($294 per tax)
Outdoorsman rack- .....$428 ish ($395 per tax)

not including bags or turn signals ($95) ... so $535 ish with signals.... and the whole kit is $764 (per tax).... so $369 or $185 per bag (seems too cheap for the bags)... I found the 30L online for $500 for a set .... 40L for $520... bigger difference then I would have thought....

huh???

Y0526.1AU and Y0527.1AU are the turn signals.

They are *pending* obsolete. This is from H-Dnet eight seconds ago.

The signals themselves are the easiest part to do; they are stock signals with about 4" extra wire attached. Cut, splice, done on your OEM signals, if you can't get the ones from the kit.

The turn signal bracket, M0232.1AUYT, is still an active part.

The bags hit the pegs. If you leave them folded or remove them...you should be OK. In my mind, though...yes, you're making this much more difficult than it needs to be. The kit is a well thought out, completely bolt-on affair that has superb execution. Why people always want to mess with success is beyond me...

I took the plunge yesterday on an '09 XP (hooray!), but am going to keep the Journey rack and bags from my '06.

So if anyone's interested in buying a new Outdoorsman setup--left/right side racks, top rack, and turn signal bracket--PM me and let's work something out. (The Outdoorsman bags, however, went with my 06 trade-in.)

Thanks Rat....

pending doesn't sound good.... local dealer said 2 dealers have them listed in stock, but that is rarely accurate....

re-wiring is fine, and saving $100 is sweet so no big deal...

I'll let you know if I need anything else....

You work at a dealership I know, does Froggy....

Supporting the dealerships that matter, does matter to me....

Cheers-

There's the main rack that the bag attaches to.

The lower rack is a spacer under the tail, that spreads the load between the lower mount points, the mounts for the sidecases, and the tail section.
